Question about 1988 Nissan 300ZX

1988 300zx 2+2 rough running and smoke

Hi i have a '88 300zx 2+2 , i just bought this car off of an old lady and nothing has been done to it except regular maintenence so i bought all the tune-up parts and a timing belt and tensioner. My friend is helping me out because i dont know nearly as much as he does but on the other hand he has not had much experience with 300zx 's. Back to the problem we put everything in ... ngk spark plugs , ngk wires , distributer cap + rotor , fuel filter , pcv valve , air filter , and then the timing belt and tensioner with the spring , also put a valve cover gasket set on because they were leaking on the left and also got a plenum gasket because we had to take it off to get to the valve cover gaskets. After the timing belt was on and everything was lined up we started it and it ran really rough and there was alot of smoke coming out of the exhaust when we stepped on the gas pedal. figured we would take it around the block to see what happens. Did that and it was smoking (grey smoke) unbeleivably and all of a sudden there was a semi-loud knocking noise so we brang it back in the shop to take another look but cant seem to figure anything out. I left the car with my friend and he said he worked on it during the week and he replaced a couple of fuel injection wires and it runs a little better but not nearly were it should. he seems to think its some type of fuel problem were its getting too much fuel but he still cant find the problem. has also taken the spark plugs out to see if they wre bent but they were fine except they were really black, and am not sure what this means. i have searched for recalls online and found that there was a fuel injector recall but am not sure if the lady ever had it done. please any suggestions or maybe even a solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

About the recall: Your Nissan dealership service dept should be able to look up your VIN# to see if the recall was done on your car. Mine did and it was. You don't even have to bring in the car. It might be just a phone call.

1988 300zx 2+2 rough running, alot of exhaust smoke

for one thing...working on this sort of vehicle with just personal know how, is chancy. Sounds to me like the fuel injection system was totally out of synch, hence the smoking, knocking, etc. So, let's begin with a few issues.

Get a service manual on this, like Chilton's etc, study it thoroughly, then find a buddy with direct experience. These 300zx cars are finicky at best(they are called the Japanese Jaguars, due to their tempermental attitude).

And, then, maybe, you'll wind up with a serviceable vehicle.

2003 tdi, 54 k miles, bought car new, had manifold cleaned, new glow plugs and harness. car has been driven only short commutes for 3 years. Heavy blue smoke at startup, then it clears right up. No...

valve seals are going. when car sits excess oil gets past the valve seals then when you staRT up it burns the oil off then runs fine and no more blue smoke. It is fine to run like that had the same in a dodge caravan 1996 6cyl. ran another 100 000 km. and still ran fine got rid of it for other reasons.

Transmission leak

Most likely problems described are not related. Rough idle and rough at low speeds could be caused by spark plug and wires due for replacement. Tranny pans known to leak and is an easy condition to remedy with filter and gasket replacement
