It is really common for the solder joints to fail on the instrument cluster circuit board. These joints can be re soldered and it will usually fix the problem.

The instrument cluster will need to be removed and disassembled. The joints are on the backside of the circuit board.

This image is the cluster removed and disassembled. the screwdriver is pointing at the cracked solder joint for the main instrument cluster ground.
Instrument panel keeps going out. bang on dash and - f39f26f.jpg
this photo is a close up of that joint. If you look carefully you can see a ring around the joint. That is the crack. It seems unlikely but that is enough for the joint to fail. Re-flowing the joint with a soldering iron will fix this problem.

Dash cluster power failure

Is it just the instrument gauge cluster that is being affected? Is there any other thing (radio illumination, park or tail lamps, etc.) that is also going out at the same time?
If the cluster is the only thing, I would look for loose electrical connections at the back of the cluster module.

Also, your Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) is part of your onboard computer network. Fault codes in either the IPC or one of the other modules (PCM, ABS, Body Control, etc.) may lead you to the cause of the IPC malfunction.

The dashboard lights does not come on,need to hit hard on top of dash then only i\the lights comes on and only half of the lights

Sounds like a contact problem or wiring broken problem somewhere behind the instrument panel.
Or, the instrument panel is defective if hitting it seems to affect it.

The dash lights wont come on in my 1987 corvette what can i do

There is only two things I can think of from where I am sitting. Locate and turn the dimmer knob either on the light switch a wheel type on the dash somewhere.
The other thing is the fuse. Under the dash should be a fuse box. one the cover should be a diagram and marked on it should say something like instrument panel or panel lights. I'm not sure.. But if you have to just take one out at a time and check it for a melted or seperated wire or burnt mark. Replace it with the same amp fuse. If you go higher there could be a wire fire. If you find one replace it but do not stop there. There are times when two can go at the same time
If you don't find any bad ones under the dash then check under the hood. Should be some more bigger ones on the top of the wheel well on the right or left closer to the firewall or windshield. Do the same check there. I can only guess but please be kind with a good thumbs up for trying ok? Thanks and keep me informed, Raz

Instrument panel removal

I suggest you invest in a 1 year subscription to It is what I used when I disassembled the dash on my car, and is way better than a paper manual. Another tip is to keep some zip lock bags, and a sharpie handy, and seperate and label all hardware that you remove to help your reassembly

My gauges don't work, on the instrument panel why?it's a 1994 dodge caravan 3.0 Liters, list of things that don't work are speedometer - gas - temperature - kilometers - I never know how much gas I have or...

There is a fuse for the instrument under the dash on the drivers side, if the fuse is good. Then give the dash a hit with your close fist right over the instrument panel, sometimes that brings it back to life. It's common for the wire harness clip on the instrument panel circuit board solder goes bad and need to be re soldered, the heat of the current after a few years will melt the solder and the clip comes loose and needs to be re solder back in place. Just remove the instrument panel from the dash, disconnect the wire harness and remove the circuit board and solder the clip back in place. Good luck and hope this helps. be glad to help.

My dash board guages in my H2 don't come on

My solution to dashboard instrument panel gauges and lights not working was to disconnect negative cable to car battery, then reconnect. After doing so, everything worked.

And the solution to instrument panel coming on and off sporadically may also be a loose battery connection.

1998 Dodge Grand Caravan. Whenever the ABS warning light comes on, there seems to be some sort of short that causes the rest of the instrument panel to die. No illumination, no gages working. When the ABS...

I had the same problem. Abs light would come on and I would lose all dash instruments. Hit a bump on the road and abs light would go off and dash would come back on. What I did to fix problem, lol I slaped the dash just to the right of instrument panel and it all came back to life. There seems to be a short there, and I slaped it back 3 times in a week and now for the last month it has stayed on.
