Question about 2008 Smart fortwo

1 Answer

My 2008 Passion for Two would not start last night. You could turn the key clockwise to start it and - nothing. The shift lever was in the Park position but not showing "P" in the dash panel. Instead, there were three horizontal LCD "bars" (flashing) showing. This went on for a while, so I called SMARTUSA and they told me it was a transmission problem. As soon as they spoke those words, (before they could say another word) I moved the lever into the Neutral position and turned the switch and it started (the shift position LCD indicator was showing "N" at the time it started). What the he#*#* is going on. Is there perhaps a position switch or other electrical device that could cause this? The car had done this about a year and a half ago just before the Smart Dealer installed a new (2009) shift ROM and new battery. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

How to fix the shift cable

  1. Position the steering column transmission shift lever to PARK (P).
  2. Apply the parking brake.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.

  1. Position the transmission range select lever to PARK (P). Rotate the range select lever clockwise until it reaches the full mechanical stop position.

  1. Slide the black retaining clip forward on the range select lever cable end. This will allow the white lock button to be pushed out.

  1. Push the white lock button on the range select lever cable end out. This will free the metal core adjust body which is inside the cable end. Do not push the white lock button completely out.
  2. Inspect the metal core adjust body on the cable end for dirt or debris that may restrict the travel. Remove any debris by washing the cable end, the metal core adjust body, and the white lock button with soap and water. If the travel of the metal core adjust body remains restricted after the cleaning, replace the cable assembly.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Ensure that the parking brake is applied.
  5. Turn ON the ignition switch.

  1. Move the transmission shift lever from PARK (P) to 1 and back to PARK (P) ten times.

  1. Place the steering column transmission shift lever in the Park (P) position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.

  1. Position the transmission range select lever to PARK (P). Rotate the range select lever clockwise until it reaches the mechanical stop position.

  1. Push in the white lock button in order to secure the core adjuster body inside the range select lever cable end.

  1. Slide the black retainer clip rearward over the cable end until it covers the white lock button. Lock the clip over the cable end.
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Turn ON the ignition switch.
  4. Ensure that all the transmission shift light positions (P. R. N. D, 3, 2, 1) engaged and illuminate. If you cannot perform this task, repeat the cable adjustment procedures.
  5. Ensure that the engine starts in PARK (P) and in NEUTRAL (N) positions only. If the engine does not start in PARK (P) and in NEUTRAL (N), the Park/Neutral Position Switch may need adjustment.
  6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
  7. Ensure that the ignition key can only be removed with the transmission shift lever in the PARK (P) position.
  8. Start the engine and check the vehicle transmission shifting. The range select lever cable is properly adjusted if the steering column shift light positions are the same as the transmission engagements.

Wont shift out of park

probably the brake pedal switch (mounted on the brake pedal lever) starting to fail. it releases the shift lever and controls the brake lights coming on. you will need to replace this.

for now, turn the key in the ignition to the lock position (counter clockwise,) then to the off position (clock wise). In this position the brake shift interlock is disabled and you can move the shifter to neutral. these instructions are also in the owners manual in the driving section. the switch should be changed because eventually you won't have brake lights.

Key won't turn in ignition at all what's the easiest way to fix this at 10 at night

Try turning the steering wheel back and forth while turning the key. If this doesnt do it pull the shift lever up all the way into park ( if automatic ) and then try to turn the key. Last resort if two edged key try turning the key over.

2006 Chrysler Pacifica- Will not shift out of Park, the steering wheel isn't locked, and the brake is releasing as it should. What else could it be?

Can't get out Park, starts ok, tried the manuel thing pressing
the pink release button, nothing. Had the car towed but
they had to hoist it on a truck. Was there a recall for this?

I have a 2007 Cadillac CTS. I go to turn the key and nothing happens. All onboard elctronics and a/c are functional. Battery life shows to be good. I have also tried using my other key set and nothing....

Test the neutral safety switch by doing the following steps.

1)foot on brake
2)turn key to on position
3)shift lever to neutral (N)
4)start the engine
5)shift the lever to Park (P)

If the engine can start at N and not at park then it's the neutral safety switch.

Can't remove ignition key. I can start it, drive it, park it (and make sure the shift lever is in park), turn the car off, but the Key will not go past the ACC position when I turn it counter clockwise.

either you have a problem with the cable that connects the gear lever to the ignition or the steering lock has broke inside. But i seem to think that its more likely to be the cable
