is there a chance it may have originated in a corvette 250 hp ?

  • larry134 Sep 30, 2010

upon looking at the front vin # on the engine block, The vin: CE931595
With the Vin# starting with CE could this be a warranty replacement blk in a 1963 Corvette??

  • larry134 Sep 30, 2010

Hi, The vin # is on the pass. side front on the plate of the engine block just below the head. I have heard rumers that chevy had corvette warranty blocks with VIN #'s starting with CE****** but I have not been able to confirm.

Hello! The CE931595 isn't a valid Block VIN number...Where exactly on the block is that alpha-numeric number? A typical Engine block VIN ....13N100001....1=chevy...3=1973...N=Norwood...
    100001= Production sequence....Send a comment...Saailer

"CE" or Crate engine information: CE123456

    Crate Engine

    Serial Number

Another type of stamping found on some blocks is the "CE" code.
You might see something like this "CE123456" on the front pad of
the block deck on the passenger side. The "CE" which has been known
to stand for "Chevrolet Engine" or "Crate Engine" was
used on blocks that were warranty replacement motors. The "CE" prefix
was also used on "over the counter" blocks and engines. If a customer
had problems with their original engine, while it was under warranty, it would
have been replaced with an engine that was stamped "CE" with a number
following it. The number following the "CE" code was the serial
number for that particular engine. Also if someone purchased a new motor from
the Chevrolet Parts counter, the front pad on the passenger side of the block
may have been stamped with a "CE" code...

The bottom line is this...That 327/250 hp...2 bolt main engine was factory installed in only a 62-63 Chevelle....However, dealer ships had crate engines...This was one of them...If a customer needed a 327/250 horse to replace a defective engine he/she got this one...Therefore, yes It could have been in a Vette...As a warranty mill but not as OEM..........WHEW....I need a coffee...Saailer

The mention of 327 cubic inch with 250 horsepower refers to "minimum 250 horsepower" Therefore this block was good from the 250 hp, 300 hp,350 hp,365 hp and finally 375 hp for the fuel injection setup....casting #3959512 was and is a very high nickel content warranty replacement block made to outlast original motors that blew up while doing what Corvette buyers did in the 60'sand that is make them go fast.

What cuin, hp, trq, bore&stroke for this small blk 1995 chevrolet impala ss. casting #43006 below sg1 below h294. stamped #1sr177932 please

I don't think you have anything that will help in your search.
The 95 Impala SS came with a 350 cu in engine stock. The VIN code was P and the horsepower rating was 260. The casting number for that block would be something like 10199001 or 14101148. After 1970 GM started stamping a partial vin number on the blocks to match the original car. If you had the original car you could check the 8th digit of the VIN to verify the engine.

Thanks for the help I just noticed my typo my casting numbers are 3858180 my apologies the engine is a 1965 327 I just cant seem to find what kind of car it was put in if anyone has any suggestions on were...

"You need to get the suffix code off the front pass side, on pad in front of the head. It will be a code thats 6, 7 or 8 digits long. The 1st one will be a letter, next 4 will ne bumbers and last 1, 2, or 3 will be letters.. Like say V0621KH. V0621 if the prefix which tells plant, mo. and day, KH would be the suffix code which tells engine size, HP, induction system, and car it was used in Your 3858180 is not a vin #, it's the casting number and no it does not decode as a corvette. The casting # does not tell what car it was installed in. Its just the size and year range. That # is added before the engine was ever thought of being built and installed. 3858180....327...1964-67...2 bolt main thats all the casting number decodes as."

I have small block chev engine #3903352 on rear of block only other info i could find was C27 was wondering if this might be a 327cu in

From what I find this number is the 3903352 number. It is a 327 from 1967 use in cars only. My guess is the C27 is a casting date code, although it seems to be missing a digit. To know what car it is from you need to find the partial vin number on the block.

Thanks for using FixYa.
