Question about 1999 Ford Expedition

1 Answer

I'm not getting any fire to my starter. All the lights and the radio work. I've replaced the ignition switch but it's still not working. What other options do I have?

Check the Wiring Harness down at your Starter. There was a NHTSA concern noted about corrosion on the wire ends. You might be able to get at least the Service Bulletin from the Dealer, run your Vin#.

Check your Starter Relay, its on the Firewall. The small wire is from the Keyswitch. You can unplug the small wire and jump the post with 12 volts. It will either crank with the jump or the Starter Relay is bad. Use jumper cables and bypass the Relay and see if the Starter is grounded out. It will arc like crazy, but if the starter does not turn over when you feed it directly, the wires or the Starter is bad..

If the Starter now cranks with the jump it means you are not getting fire to the Relay through the original small wire. The wire could have a bad connector or a break in that wire. However, the Antitheft system can also cut power to that relay. If you have another computerized Key for the Expedition, try it as your current key may be dead. Do not use another vehicles' key.

If another vehicles key was inserted into your Expedition, it can cause a wipe of the onboard Security Code. Remote starters can also disconnect the small wires' power. Try disconnecting the Ground Cable for 10 minutes and see if it resets.

Would like to know what defect you found.

I replaced the ignition switch in my 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora due to no start but now it starts and I have lights to my dash and all I just have no power to the cluster beside lights, so none of my guad

If your ignition switch is is hooked to a small rod going down from the steering wheel down to ignition switch mounted under dash. You have to loosen ignition switch attaching screws and slide the switch up or down to get it allighned properly. It is either moving to far or not far enough. If the starter engages it is traveling to far which will cut off accessories power.

1994 Mazda Protege wouldn't start, battery seemed dead replaced battery with a new one and still no power

Does anything work? Lights, radio? Do the warning lights and gauges turn on when key is turned to on? That would verify power is getting to the ignition switch and is being sent out.
Pretty limited in what you can check without a voltmeter or test light. If you have power to the ignition switch, need to know if power is getting to the starter solenoid on the starter motor when the key is held in cranking position. If power there, likely a new starter is called for-have yours tested.

Replaced starter and ignition relays under hood on my 99 chevy silverado and to wont do anything no security light no nothing is on everything good on all connections replaced wiring harness...

Is power getting to the ignition switch? Do the warning lights and gauges come on when key is turned to on? That would verify power in and power out at the switch. Then you would need to check the start circuit. A single start wire comes out of the switch, the signal travels through the neutral safety switch and a starter relay and then to the starter solenoid mounted on the starter. Solenoid closes contacts so battery power can operate the starter. If new starter doesn't work, power has been lost between the ignition switch and the starter.
If no power to the ignition switch check maxi fuses, all fuses in fact, and possibly a fusible link from the battery that may be the feed for the switch.

2004 olds alero 3400 eng.turn on key and all warning lights and gauges come up,then all goes off after 3 seconds, starter will not work, can start by jumping across starter and runs fine and shifts fine

Check for power at the switch wire when someone turns the key to start. I would say there is a break in the circuit of the thin wire between the starter & the ignition switch

When I replaced ignition switch in a 2000 buick centery I stll cannot get power to starter and power windows ,gas guage and radio don't work

Sounds like the Ignition switch wasn't the problem, check your fuse links at starter, they are soft fuseable wire that will burn if shorted or even when they get old over time they will go bad. they are the smaller like #10-12 ga. wire , should be at least 1 maybe 2 of them at harness connection to starter.

1993 suburban is not starting and it is not the battery. What could it be?

IF BATTERY CABLES OLD THEY WILL CAUSE POOR GROUND HIGH RESISTANCE IN STARTER CIRCUIT CAUSING STARTER NOT TO CRANK ENGINE.CHECK TO SEE IF DASH LIGHTS AND GAUGES WORK WHEN YOU TURN ON IGNITION SWITCH IF NO CHECK IGNITION FUSES.IF FUSES OKAY IGNITION SWITCH IS OPEN NEED REPLACING.NOW IF BATTERY VOLTAGE IS 12.6 VOLTS, BATTERY CABLES GOOD AND IGNITION SWITCH AND FUSE OKAY. STARTER SOLENOID OR STARTER FAULTY.REMOVE STARTER TAKE TO ANY AUTO PARTS STORE THEY WILL TEST STARTER.TURN OFF RADIO BEFORE REMOVING NEGATIVE BATTERY SO YOU WONT LOCK OUT RADIO.

My 98 jeep grand cherokee wont start. It doesnt even click or turn over. battery is fine, headlights, dome lights, all go on. Radio doesnt work with ignition on. I checked ALL the fuses, I replaced the...

fuse 8 40a supplies power to starter relay and ignition switch, to close the starter solenoid and engage the starter which draws directly from the battery. check to see that the starter relay is closing, if not ensure that the park neutral switch is not faulty (open circuit), it provides path to close relay (ground side) on the 85 - 86 terminals. if the starter relay does not close the starter will not run. if you have a spare relay swap out the relay for a quick fix attempt. hope this helps

Truck wont turn over but the lights and radio still work is it the starter

If you have tried a boost.......even though the lights and radio work and hear a click when turning to start......it may need a starter.
It would be best to check for voltage to the starter and from the smaller wire at the starter solenoid when turning the key to start position before replacing the starter.
With the truck in park or neutral....jump the starter solenoid from under the truck......with no cranking from the starter under these conditions....yes...... you may need a starter.

If you do not get a voltage reading at the smaller wire at the solenoid when the key is in start mode....check the wiring, starter relay, the safety neutral switch and the ignition switch.
If you have anti theft.........this may cause a no start too.
