HI. I have prepared some steps for you to follow.This will aid you will the troubleshooting.


Step1 Check for broken wires or loose connectors around the fan circuit. Inspect connectors at the fan motor, relay, sensor or heat sensitive switch, and the Electronic Control Module (ECM)--your car’s computer control system. Also, make sure to check for a possible blown fan fuse. These are common and overlooked troublesome spots that may cause a fan to fail. Step2 Run and bring the engine to warm temperature. With the engine running, use a voltage test light to check for power to the motor fan. Be extra careful and make sure to keep your hands and tools away from the belt, fan or any other engine moving parts. If voltage is reaching the fan motor, the test light should glow. Step3 Turn off the engine after you see the light glow. Apply direct voltage to the fan motor from your car battery using a pair of spare wires. If the fan fails to operate, replace the fan motor. If the motor operates, your problem is in the motor connector. Step4 Locate the heat-sensitive switch or heating sensor if the fan motor operates with direct voltage and the test light did not glow. You should find the sensor in the radiator, engine block, or thermostat housing. Step5 Measure the resistance across the heating sensor with the multimeter. With the engine at cool temperature (engine off), it should register infinite resistance; with the engine at warm temperature (engine off), you should read low resistance. If both readings state infinite resistance install a new heating sensor, that’s the cause of your failing fan. Step6 Check the action of the fan relay if the heating sensor is registering variable resistance. Your service manual should specify the power and ground wires according to color codes and the proper way to test it. If the fan relay fails the test replace it with a new one. Step7 Check the connections going to the ECM after you determine the fan relay is working properly. If you find broken wires or loose connectors, make the necessary repairs. If you suspect a defective ECM take your vehicle to a service shop for a computer analysis. In most cases, the ECM is rare to be the cause of a failing fan. The above steps should take you to the root cause of your problem and help you fix the cooler fan.

SOURCE: Cooling fan wont work

The water temp sensor is located near the thermostat housing. This sensor is what tells the ECM to turn the fan on/off. The water temp sending unit is located near the same area. You know you have the correct sensor is because the water temp sensor has a 2 prong plug. The water temp sending unit only has 1 prong.

remove the cooling fan relay you should have power on the pink and black wire and the solid red wire going to the base for the relay if you do then check then turn the a/c on and check for your ground sigal from the darkgreen and white wire if no ground you have a bad fan control module located on the right side of the engine compartment

Try the cooling fan switch, it looks like a large brass nut with wires on it on the thermostat housing or radiator.
To test, pull off the wires and connect together, turn on ignition and the fans should cut in.
If they don't it could be the relay, fuse or broken wire.
The switch is easy to replace, unscrew and rescrew in the new one. Connect the wires, not important which way the wires go, and refill coolant.

Did you check the fan relays ? There are two, cooling low relay an cooling fan high relay . The relays are turned on by the vehicles PCM - engine computer , when an input from the coolant temp. sensor indicates a certain temperature ! When you turn on your A/C the cooling fan should turn on an stay on .

Do you know how to test a computer controlled relay ? Go to you tube an search relay testing . Does the temp. gauge work correctly ? I know you probably don't have a factory scan tool , but this is the where I would start , checking temp. sensor input to the PCM . An with a factory scan tool I can do bidirectional testing , see if I could turn the fans on will scan tool .

You need to get a 12v test light for this sort of thing,otherwise you will waste a lot of money replacing good parts.If you already replaced the motor,the next logical thing to try would be the relay.(you can swap the cooling fan relay with one of the others in the relay center instead of buying another-just make sure you mark it before you move it).Try trading it with the fuel pump relay.If the relay is defective,the car won't start.If it isn't the relay,the relay socket is an excellent place to test everything in the circuit with the test light.

How can i test to see if my fan on my 99 intrepid works.It over heats.


Had an issue on my 98 Voyager with the cooling fan not working,noticed this on the test drive after changing the crankshaft and bearings(probably already broken).There was a relay for the cooling fan on the radiator support (not in the relay center).You might have a similar setup,but regardless,the fan IS on a relay somewhere.The relay socket will have all the test points necessary to diagnose the fan.The 2 largest conductors will be 12v in and the 12v feed to the fan.Jumper these 2 large conductors and the fan should run.If it does,then look for a ground to the relay,and also verify a few volts or switched ground from the PCM when the A/Cis on.

Hi Marie.

Test if there is voltage to fan motor with engine hot (use a test light or a Voltmeter). If there is 12VDC to fan motor and motor does not turn, then the fan must be replaced. An alternative way to test the fan would be energizing the motor by connecting it to 12VDC. If fan does not run when motor is energized, then the fan is defective.

If fan does not get power fuse, fan relay, thermostat and wiring must be tested. If you have already replaced thermostat, test the rest.

Check the fan fuse first. Most VW use a 30 Amp fuse located in the fuse plate. Refer to the car owners manual for fuse location. Depending on the year of your Polo there is a Coolant Fan Control Relay on the main relay panel. If the relay is good it must power the fan when the engine is hot. Before going for the relay check that two of the relay's contacts are getting power. If there is no power to the relay and fuse is good it means that there is a wiring problem.

The air is not cool when idling, it blows warm. Also the setting 1 and 2 doesnt work, only 3 and for makes air blow.


Sounds like 2 different problems here. The ac gets warm when standing idle, is most likely the under hood fan not kicking on when ac is on. This may be a fuse issue or a relay. When ac is on, the fan should be on all the time. Relay maybe in an electrical box under the hood. Unplug the fan and test for power with a test light to see if the fan has power when ac is "on".

The inside fan not working on levels 1& 2 is likely the voltage ballast issue. this is an electrical block which controls voltage to change fan speeds. Usually found under the passenger side dash, right in the air flow comming from the fan and inside the air flow housing. Usually held in by 2 or 3 screws with a connector and 3-4 wires sticking out. this should be under $20 to buy and quite easy to change, if you can find it. Try behind glove box etc. Do not test the new one without it being in place, as it may burn out very quickly without the air flow to cool it.

The fans on the cooling system aren't working. checked for a blown fuse and they are fine, no burnt wires, and everything is plugged in


There may also be a relay for the fans in a black plastic box under the hood. Open the box (probably on the driver side) and look for a relay marked 'fan', or 'cooling fan', or something of that nature. The relay will be a plastic box that pushes into place. I usually test a relay by finding another relay exactly the same in another spot an switch it with the suspected bad relay. If the fans now work but something else doesn't, you've found your bad relay.

engine coolant temperature sensor unit!? you say you had a thermostat issue some times if you over heat these the switch above might cause malfunction! I just spent 7 hours on relays!! with engine running un plug coolant sensor temp switch if your fan comes on you have no relay issues!! or ground problem keep in mind this switch tells the system the temperature then when reached sends signals to relay the fan to come on! when I unplugged mine fan ran plugged it back in off!!! replaced switch works great this is the true way to test don't get$$ it out hope this helps you out also be sure you have no air locks in your cooling system and you properly bleeded out all air sense you changed thermostat.John
