SOURCE: Brakes locked on

Your rear brake shoes are stuck. The assembly is held togehter with spring which appy pressure to return your brake pads to there original position. The park brake uses a cable to pull the brake pads out to lock against the brake drum, this is where your problem is at. Sometimes pulling the tires off a hitting around the outside of the drums will free the brakes. Other times driving a few feet will do the trick I would try this first. This is a problem you encounter with older vehicles that have higher milage and is a sign that your brake hardware is getting old. You can find online manuals on most vehicles for free at if you want to take on replaceing them yourself. Keep on mind if you are going to have it apartanyway you can save money and trouble later by replacing the shoes, hardware and wheel cylinders at the same time.

SOURCE: hand brake

There could be a loose connection where it reads when the hand break is up. So it may be loose you would have to take apart your center consol where your handbreak is located and tighten up the sensor to see if that is infact the problem. But it really couldn't be anything else from my point of view

hope this helps

Handbrake light stays on

If you have checked your brake fluid level is fine try pulling off the plug that goes to the lid of your brake fluid reservoir and plug it back in just to check for a bad earth as usually a faulty handbrake switch will make the handbrake light flash and beep as a safety warning to let you know you have left your handbrake on
I hope this helps Nick

Locking brake on the rear passenger side!

Its probably the rubber hose that goes between the metal break line and the caliper. That hose is like a 2 way valve that lets fluid into the caliper when brakes are applied and lets fluid back out when brakes are released. These hoses deteriorate and stop letting fluid back out causing the brake to stay tight against rotor.

My 2009 Toyota RAV4 (4WD) had been sitting in garage for about 3 weeks. Started fine but didn't want to move forward or back and then the electronic stability light would flash after a couple of seconds....

sounds like the handbrake had stuck on.
the brake shoes can bind if the handbrake is left on and this is probably the clunk noise.
you are almost certainly right about the "cleaning themselves"
if you look at the disk surface after a few weeks parked up you will probably see it is a little "rusty" .

if you are leaving a car for more than a week or so, you should release the handbrake first.
either leave it in park as this will lock the gearbox rather than the wheels, or chock the wheels.
that way the pads will not bind to the disks/drums. you may still have the grinding noise as the light rust on the surface is removed.

Parking brake won't release but hand lever moves freely

Thanks for using FixYa. In Jaguar XKR the parking brake is controlled electronically unlike the cable ones. The voltage applied to the electronic Park Brake module is applied at the same time you start the engine, consequently on a very cold day the battery will be far less efficient and due to the extra power required to start a very cold 6 cylinder engine the voltage will fall.

Although this reduced voltage will quite happily start the car it will trip out the Parking brake. To help avoid this problem happening again switch the ignition to position 2(position just prior to starting) and press the chrome handbrake tab down while having your foot on the brake. The brakes will be released, the park brake light on the dash will go out and you can now start the car.

On the new XKR module the electronic handbrake is not activated by the gear shift as in the later S models so you can start the car and then release the brake when the engine is running.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

this is generally a failure in the hand brake assembly itself.Pulling the center console will reveal the mechanism that locks the brake cable in the unit. You probably will notice its inability to hold in this area which will necessitate replacement .

Parking brake on my 2004 2.5SE Auto does not release properly so the rear N/S disc is binding. Can it be freed up easily or does it require a 2nd mortgage? Hi, we've got the same problem but car...

Try a reset, to do this =

Disconnect negative lead to battery, wait 15 mins, then reconnect.
press and hold foot brake on, then operate handbrake switch to put handbrake on. then release foot brake and see if handbrake releases on moving away or manually on the switch.
Before diconecting battery make sure you have the radio code.
good luck
