How do I remove a 1987 ranger ignition switch without a key

I've gotten to the point where I've drilled out the pin that locks the cylinder in place, but something else is holding it in. The manual calls for the removal of break-off head bolts, but I don't know what those are. I don't see anything else protruding from the shaft. Down the steering column a few inches away is an electrical harness connected to the column which is mounted with two screws that require a bit that is star shaped with a stem in the middle. This is the only other thing I can see to remove that may engage the shaft which sticks out the bottom of the new ignition switch.

I wish I had an illustration to look at, but not even the manuals provide that. Just wish I knew what the "break-off head bolts" are.

1987 toyota pickup lost all electrical except headlights

What works? Just headlights? Does anything electrical work that does not need the ignition switch to be in the on position? Possibly four way flashers, brake lights, horn, interior light, dash lights in instrument panel as well as headlights should all work without the key in the ignition and in the acc or on position. If this is what you have, then I would say you need to replace the ignition switch.
Hope this helps.

I have no key to my 1993 ford ranger xlt 4.0 Auto 2wd Ignition switch removal and Installation

In most cases you will have to drill it.
There are videos on Youtube that show how its done.
Most all Ford locks in the late 80s and early 90s are the same style.

Ignition switch 1994 ranger

If it were me, I'd take the Vin # down to the Dealer and get a key made(and take back the ignition you bought). As far as I know without the original key to allow the release pin to depress, the only possible chance might be to try another Ford key and it may release the ignition basket. Or call a locksmith and he can make a key for probably $50. **Or (ha ha) I could make a copy of my '94 Ranger key and send you a copy ! :>)
