The spring will always go towards the motor on any vehicle. This allows the lower temperature coolant from the radiator to enter the motor before it enters the heater.

Where is the thermostat located on a 1974 lemans engine

the thermostat is inside a housing which connects on one end to the engine and the other end goes inside the black hose coming from the radiator going to the top of the engine. You have to drain the coolant, unscrew the hose clamp, pull off the hose, unbolt the housing, remove radiator and gasket, clean the metal surfaces, install new gasket and thermostat, etc.

Replacing a thermostat

Thermostat housing should be at the end of radiator hose going into the engine.
With engine cool, drain coolant from radiator, remove thermostat housing (usually 2 or 3 bolts holding it on) Once removed, remove old thermostat, should pop right out. Using a razor blade, remove any existing gasket material on the therm. housing. Once clean put on new gasket (one side of gasket should have an adhesive, put this side against the engine side of the housing) install new thermostat, Reassemble, fill with coolant.
With the radiator cap off, start the engine, run for a moment (you are "burping" the cooling system) replace radiator cap. Should be good to go.

Where is the thermostat located

thermostat is located at the end of the lower radiator hose, not the upper like most vehicles. Remove the two bolts (most likely 10mm, you'll need a deep socket 10mm) then the housing. The thermostat is in the housing. remove and replace with a new one.

Where is the thermostat located in my 1995 mazda 626

The thermostat is located on the engine block, where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. You'll see a large elbow-like component that is attached to the engine with 2 bolts.
Just follow that upper radiator hose and you got the location. When you remove that housing (elbow-like component), you'll see the thermostat.
Make sure you note which end of the thermostat is up and which end is down. Don't reverse the install.
