Question about Ford Bronco

1 Answer

1995 Ford Bronco 4x4. Has howl (metal on metal noise) in left front hub area. I have pulled hubs apart and checked bearings, they looked good, but were loose and the grease was thin like liquid. I cleaned hubs, filled with new grease, repacked wheel bearings, and put all back together and still makes the same noise. i used wd40 to spray on back side of hub where the axle shaft goes though into the hub, thinking it was dry and making noise, but still no change. removed auto locking hub and drove around parking lot and still there. This has me baffled. I was a Ford mechanic for 5 years and new encounter this noise. Any idea's? I am thinking that I need to replace the bearing and replace the seal on the shaft that goes through the hub.

A howl usually is a bad bearing

That is what I was a thinking, but they looked good, had no pitting, metal transfer. I think I will replace them, and the races aswell. Could a race spinning in the hub too? I do know that they were loose when I disassemble it. Thanks

It's possible but the bearings would have to be pretty bad for the race to spin although I have seen it on farm machinery

I have a escape 02 4x4 that howls maybe the hubs

check tires as well. But yea if you are driving when the noise exists, swaying back and forth in lanes will let you know if its a hub noise. If its a hub noise the growl will be louder or different when weight shifts off and on the hub. Where weight is on the hub it usually gets louder. Alot of the time there may be two problems like tires and hub noise. Tire noise is easier as rotating front wheels and rear wheels will change position of growling/howling noises.
Good luck

ok does noise change when turning left or right if not its not a wheel bearing next try putting in neutral at 55 does noise change what you are looking for these is pinion and carrier bearings in differential the noise can be coming from several places have you checked all your fluid levels front and rear diffs and transfer case also check fluid condition also check for metal in fluids if you stick finger or paper towel in and if you see metal you will know where your noise is coming from

It sounds like your front hubs are worn out. Actually just 1 of them. You can put in 4 high or low pull it forward chock it raise the frnt wheels to see which one isnt locking by turning it. Most people just go ahead and buy new set of manual Waren lockers.

You probably have a bad hub bearing. If you can change the noise by slightly turning the vehicle one way or the other it is a hub bearing. If you turn left and the noise is still there then it is the right front bearing. If you turn right and the noise is still there it is the left side.If it makes the noise both ways it could be both front hubs.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Grinding when turning right or left from a stopped position

Losing turning radius is normal for 4x4. The grinding can be from hidden rear emergency brakes in back of rear rotors. The front pads can make noise and the front hubs should be checked if you do decide on replacing the front brakes.
