Question about Fiat 124

1 Answer

When I engage first gear and begin to move with my steering turned sharply to one side, the car shudders violently. This does not seem to happen when the front wheels are pointed forward. I am not able to figure out whether this has to do with the wheels ( I got them aligned recently, but this did not help), or with the fuel flow or clutch. The car is a Fiat Palio 1.25 Petrol with 38,000 kms on it. Any help at unravelling this will be deeply appreciated.

Check the CV joints in the axles. If the boots are torn or there is play in the joints, replace affected CV joints.

Just replaced steering gear box an now the

if the correct steering box was installed and you have a shudder afterwards then it sounds like you still have air in the system. to bleed the air out you have to start the car and turn the steering wheel all the way left to the stop and then all the way to the right to the stop. repeat and check the power steering fluid level when the foamy fluid goes away. you don`t say why you changed the box, was it due to a different problem or was it doing the same thing.

When i start to drive in first gear, i experience extreme shaking

If you have a manual gear box there are two things that you can check. First is the engine mounts especially the rear one to see if the rubber has broken away. Check all engine mounts for the same problem.. The second is a failing clutch or if you have a cable operated clutch it points to engine mounts. What appears to be happening is when you engage the clutch in first gear the torque reaction of the engine is rolling the gear box away from the clutch actuation arm or lever. The clutch slips ,the engine rolls back ,the clutch engages , the engine rolls and so you have a bad shudder. When you are moving the reaction is less as you move up through the gears . If all is good then have a qualified clutch and brake specialist do a check on the clutch itself.

Car dies while driving

Power steering only works when engine is running as it driven by a pump similar to your water pump. You say AC works, the fan motor may work, but w/o engine it will not cool air as it runs a compressor and probably has free-wheel clutch pulley.

How many miles are on your vehicle? Do you know if spark plugs have been changed? How about either ignition coil?

Kia rio steering wheel is locked and won't turn

Okay, I just had this same problem with my 2009 Kia Rio and I did this. So not to down everyone's post on here -- everyone is correct -- by turning the steering wheel back and forth and turning the ignition key at the same time is a correct method. However, after talking to a Kia Serviceman, he told me you have to do it hard -- meaning turning it violently back and forth hard (madman style). In order to do this operation, I had my wife sit in the driver side and turn the key while I was on her left side grabbing the steering wheel and violent moving it back and forth like a madman, and after about 2mins of doing it the key turned over -- problem fixed. Do not worry about breaking anything; turning the steering wheel violently hard is a must -- this was told to me by a Kia service Rep. Remember -- have someone assist you; either turning the key or violently turning the steering wheel back and forth. Hope this works for you!!!!!

My clutch was becoming difficult to engage. The next day it wouldn't engage at all. It will engage when turned off, but when it's turned on and I pull it towards a gear it starts shuddering like it is...

This happen to my prelude... For me I could put in gear and when I let out the clutch it would stall and not move... I unfortunately had to get a new tranny.... It was locked up..... I could still move the car freely off and out of gear....

Every time the steering wheel is turned sharply to either side I hear a kind of cranking sound what seems like it is coming from the steering shaft.

Most sounds while turning (grinding, clicking, clunking, etc) indicate bad CV joints. I'd get this looked at ASAP...

The ignition cylinder turns free not engaging the starter. I need to know just what is between the cylinder and the ignition switch

The cylinder engages a gear which moves a rack (straight piece with gear teeth) which changes the rotational movement into straight movement. The rack connects to a rod which runs down the top side of the steering column to the switch which is above your feet. Most likely, the switch is bad which is fairly easy to change. The second choice is problems with the gear/rack assembly which is very difficult to get to, requiring removal of the steering wheel and a lot of little pieces. Good luck.
