Something is seriously wrong with the cooling circuit - the burning smell is coming from th gaskets, you will gonna have to replace them very soon since they were damaged.
First you must check that there's still enough water/coolant in the circuit - if not refill it to the max, run the engine and locate the leak; next check the belt for the water pump; then the thermostat - take it out and put it in a kettle of boiling water, if it doesn't open then it's faulty; finally the fan.
If all of these are ok then he only thing left is the water pump - it's faulty and must be replaced.

The light is on because when the engine overheated this badly it has surely fried a sensor - the error code must be read (with a special reading tool) to identify what sensor failed and then replace it.

Since the cause of the overheat appears to be gone then the cause will be either in
    - most likely the fan - a coil in the motor for the fan is fried and if the fan stops on it it will not turn
    - the thermostat is failing
Find out which and replace it. For your piece of mind you should replace them both - they don't cost very much anyway - good parts from a breaker will cost less than 50 pounds both.

In my 2004 ford focus I turn my fan on and it runs for a little bit, then stops. About a minute later I smell burning. I turn the dial to 0 and the smell goes away.

Your blower motor is bad and overheating. You need to replace it. What you are smelling is the resin on the windings of the motor.

Ford Focus LX 2.0L 2003: radiator fan not working

This can be caused by a few things. First, the fan motor may be burned out or the temperature switch may be malfunctioning so the fan doesn't engage. The thermostat may also have gone out which prohibits the coolant to circulate through the engine and radiator thus cooling your engine.

Clutch vibrating

Two reasons for this. Rattling is usually faulty pressure plate which means clutch overhaul. Depending on which Focus some have a rubber mounted flywheel which dies and must be replaced. Either way its gearbox out and check. First check all gearbox and engine mounts, but it sounds more serious.

If worse comes to worse, hard wire the fan to a toggle switch and mount the switch somewhere in the car that is easy for you to access. That way when you're driving down the road and you notice your temp starting to get a little high, flip the switch and let it run as long as you need it to.
