Question about 2001 Dodge Caravan
On vehicles with OBD II after 1996 the vehicle must complete drive cycles to self test and check the emission/computer system. this is so if you do have a problem you can not just unhook the battery or clear the code and pass an emission test. there are different procedures and drive cycles for the different makes and models and they are quite lengthy. on some of the test you have to complete what they call 2 trips before the vehicle will check that particular item and if it fails it turns on the check engine light. you unhook the battery or someone clears the code and it all starts over again until the vehicle has no faults in the management system and completes 2 drive cycles. small summary of drive cycle-if equipped evap monitor requires a cold start (engine off for approx 8 hours)coolant temp and battery temp within 10* of ambient temp.outside temp should be between 40*-90*f gas tank should have more than 30% fuel in it. catalyst monitor runs when your at highway speeds for few minutes it typically starts to run around 45-60 mph EGR monitor have to be in closed loop, coolant above 170*f, o2 monitor drive at highway speeds for a few minutes when you come to a stop let it in drive for a few seconds with foot on brake-in an automatic this monitor will not run in park/neutral. i didn't make this up it's some of the steps that's listed for the monitors to run and complete. once the engine is warm you have to let it cool for the 8 hrs or so or it won't rerun the evap monitor if it failed it the first time-unreal isn't it. if it passes most and you unhook battery/clear codes it has to complete all monitors again.

A vacuum leak will do all that for you, aamco trans will check that light on code in the computer for free. You would be smart to find someone to check your computer for all codes because it will tell you without wasting money on bad advise.
