Question about 1988 Chevrolet S-10

1 Answer

I just bought a 1988 S-10 2.8 ltr 2WD. Amazingly it runs really well. The engine runs really smooth. The tranny shifts like new. But I need help with two things. 1) It vibrates at 30 MPH regardless if it is out of gear coasting down hill or pulling a hill. It vibrates very loud and shakes the truck. Also at about 60 MPH in OD normally you hear a nice humm. But it sound like it roaring and it feels like I am losing torc. What could possible cause these issues. Thanks David

Not sure what torc sounds like, sorry do not want to be rude. but i think your proublem is one of two things, check to see that your wheels are balanced and all the lugs are tight, if not that then check the drive shaft, u-joints and or center bearing. drive shafts have weights on them and can become unbalanced especially after u-joints have been changed. (like wheels after you put new tires on them)

Car won't up shift or down shift at hot temperature

your tranny shifts according to pressure the transmission control unit regulates the pressure to provide smooth shifts you need to take the car to a good tranny shop that has a scanner that can check the shift points

Slow shifting when engine is cold

I have the same problem with my 97.... especially shifting from 3rd to O/D... I've had the tranny serviced and flushed.... It still does it until the tranny warms up.... the tranny's in them are temperature picky!!!!! It's the nature of the beast!!! Wait until spring and everything will be good until next winter!!! If you're really concerned with it you can put a "cold front" on it or block half (NO MORE THAN HALF) of the tranny cooler with cardboard thru the winter months

did you drain the fluid, it may have lots of metal and be really gummed up causing it to over heat and burn off. Aside from that the most commonly overlooked "check engine" proplem is the O2 sensors, there should be 2 of them

Can't transfer to 4L or neutral mode

Transfer cases can be quirky. I've got a 91 Wrangler, an 86 Cherokee and a 75 Blazer. When I go from 2WD to 4WD, they each have their own personality.

There are a number of things I've learned to persuade a stubborn xfer case to shift.

Try mixing these :
  • Engine running, vehicle not moving
  • Engine off, Shift Xfer case, Restart
  • Tranny in neutral
  • Shift Xfer case 'N', Tranny in gear, Tranny in neutral, Xfer case to 4HI or 4LOW (as long as you feel it register), Tranny in gear, try to move
  • Shift Tranny to Reverse, roll a few yards
  • Lock/Unlock the Hubs
To get back to 2WD:
  • Drive for a few feet in a straight line
  • Unlock the hubs
  • Tranny Neutral
  • Shift xfer case
Let me know how it turns out.
