Question about 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle

2 Answers

2006 Beetle with 32000 miles. Had dead battery a week ago. Took it to shop and replaced the battery, test of starting components showed no problems. Today car wouldn't start and it appeared to again be a dead battery. No power to lights, radio, etc. Hooked up jumper cables and everything came on but car still would not start. Cranked briefly then just clicked, engine wouldn't turn over. I'm concerned that this is going to turn into a major repair and want your opinion before towing it to the dealer.

Thanks but I really can't do those checks as I have no equipment or expertise. I suppose the dealer will run a diagnostic but probably at a high price.

I appreciate the answer I rec'd. though it was a bit too technical for me to accomplish. I'm hoping for some thoughts about what may have caused this problem and what would be reasonable to expect as a fix. I don't want to take it to a dealer being completely ignorant about the cause and have unneccesary and expensive things done to repair.

The shop that installed the battery said the diagnostic they ran included the alternator and it came up O.K. One more thing that happened last night (which was the last time I drove the car) was an indicator lamp came on. Owners manual identifies it as Exhaust System Malfunction. I intended to take it in for that today but couldn't because it wouldn't start.

Thanks very much for the time you took explaining the issues. I am truly grateful for your assistance

It sounds like the alternator is shot.If your battery is dead after a week,it is not charging.Crank briefly then just click is typical of a dead battery. When you hooked up the jumpers and everything came back on,that is another sign, however, your battery is so far gone that it still would not start.I assume the belt is not broke because you would also lose power steer,brake,A/C,and probably overheat also.If you have an Autozone nearby, they will perform a free check on both the battery and alternator I believe.Since it ran a week with no problems, the PCM should be good.Another possibility would be the voltage regulator but does not seem as likely as the alternator.Good luck! I would at least get a second opinion on the alternator. For a new battery to die within a week is most likely the alternator. The exhaust malfunction could cause it to not start but would not kill the battery. The PCM is the powertrain control module. It gets a signal from your keyswitch, brakes on,and starter relay to tell the system all is good let's go(fuel injectors, ignition coils, fuel pump relay and pump). It happens so fast that you cannot tell, less than 1 second.Since your car was running for a week, that alone proves the PCM and all the things in relation to engine starting and operation are working fine.If your serpentine belt, belt operated by engine running is loose,or if the belt tensioner is bad,it would cause the battery to die.If those are normal, the alternator is the only thing left.Ask a AAA approved local shop about everything you told me and that I told you. They will at least give a free opinion and are the most reliable.

2006 new beetle tdi wont start or try to turn over. Gage lights come on. It started by taking a couple of cranks before it started. Now nothing.

have the battery load tested as it appears that there is a dead cell . Lights will work but when there is a hugh current flow the battery chucks it in . Check that the battery posts and terminals are shiny clean and tight.

I have a 2006 new beetle, just put in a new battery about a week ago. It drove fine. My problem is, the car won't start when i turned the key. I tried many attempts, but just won't budge. Is

Hi there, with this kind of problem in general, you have to look on any source from where your battery is being drained. Check your new battery if it is drained again. If the voltage is below 12V means there is a close circuit that is using your battery while it is stopped. Recharge your battery and try starting your car or ask a friend to jump your car. If it wont start check your starter motor. Another factor to think of is maybe your alternator is not charging your battery.

Battery dead in 2006 lexus ls430

well i would start with testing the alternator first. meanwhile get a battery maintainer/charger to charge to battery while not in use.
the alternator test will tell you if the alternator is charging the battery while driving or not. usually your local autopart store will test it for free

Electrical problems

Sound like the car is not recharging the battery as you drive. Take it to a different shop and ask them to test the alternator and entire charging system as well as the battery.

Don't know if this has anything to do with your problem, but it could be worth a try.
My 2001 turbo had a similar problem when it was low on oil.
The oil light never came on, but it was low enough to cause it to stall.
Seems there has to be enough oil circulating on the camshaft (I think they told me the camshaft, now it has been so long that I am not positive).
Either way, a quart and a half of oil solved my stalling problem.
And the problem got bad enough before I had it towed to the VW shop that it wouldn't start, very much like it had a dead battery or an electrical (starter/ignition) problem, but i still had plenty of power for horn, lights, radio, etc.

Hope this helps!

Peace,

Rob
