Question about 1998 GMC Sierra

3 Answers

I have a 1998 K2500 GMC Ext Cab with fuel pump problems. I purchased a new Delphi fuel pump at NAPA and installed it. Truck ran great for about 400 miles. I had driven the truck to a trade show and shut it off to go in, when I got back in the truck 6 hours later the pump would not run. I was towed to a shop where they replaced the pump with another Delphi unit. I drove home 300 miles, got up the next day and drove about 60 to 70 miles and parked it in my driveway. Decided to drive it again 6 days later and the pump is not working again. One thing I noticed that was strange after replacing the pump the first time is the fuel gauge quivers and it did with the 2nd pump as well. Got any good advice for me.

Hate to say after the fact, just maybe non of the pumps were bad
I would only work on that issue when I had a complete vehicle wiring diagram to study,or at least all of the fuel system.
Relay, bad or loose grounds, almost anywhere that drops something effecting to fuel system, any modules if applicable.
Kind of a logic problem, with a twist of testing. Can't do anything without a window into your issues (The Wiring Diagram)
A loose wire on the ignition switch, pulled out of it's terminal. Any other things stop working. See why I want all the wiring schematics!

The first thing i would check is the fuel pressure. the fuel pump may be running, but that doesn't mean that it is putting out the right amount of fuel

A bad coolant temp sensor for the ECM will cause that problem ... they are cheap and easy to replace. One other possibility is a piece of carbon stuck in the EGR causing an internal vacuum leak ..
Good luck.

Theres only one fuel pump relay, unless you have dual tanks. Be sure you have 55-60 psi fuel pressure. I "think" the oil pressure switch supplies power to the fuel pump after the engine is running.

I would check the fuel lines themselves and make sure there is no blockage. If not you might want to check your fuel injectors and see if they need to be replaced. also make sure you didnt install fuel filter backwards.

fuel pump died replaced it truck ran poorly afterwards. Had a prussuer test done pump determend pump was no good. Put in another ran good for 2 days started running poorly hard to start no power. 2nd fuel pump. So i figure another bad new fuel pump wow changed it put in a third brand new fuel pump. Still will not eve start now. I had it tuned up 2 months ago new plugs rotor, cap, etc. put in a new fuel filter made sure it is on proper checked all connections for leaks. this cannot be a fuel pump problem now. no problem with the elctrical i figure i have great spark on ignition tester. I can hear the fuel pump prime when i turn the key. but when i went and checked the fuel port i had no pressure. When it is being cranked gas sews out of the test port. Also i dont if this is comon cause i used to turn my keyand go. but when i have someone turn the key and i listen at the gas tank whn the key is shut off i hear gs spraying back into the gas tank. So i am open for opinions.
