The best way to know if the thermostat opens is by removing your radiator cap. Rev the engine and if you see the coolant moving on the radiator then that means the thermostat is open. if not then it is in close mode. If you want to open the thermostat simultaneuously, wait till your engine reach the operating temp. and turn the accleration wire in our engine. If you noticed the coolant is moving from left to right then your cooling systems is working and your thermostat is open,

The upper radiator hose will start to get hot, from the coolant escaping the engine, when the thermostat opens.

I have a 1995 Toyota with brand new thermostat, new radiator, and new fan switch.thermostat not opening, what do I do?

It is possible that there is no coolant on the engine side of the thermostat. Sometimes there is an air lock that will not let the coolant reach the thermostat on the engine side. It may open from the coolant heat if the engine is run long enough, but you have to watch the engine temperature, or you might overheat it.

The thermostat is electrically opened by the computer, there are two coolant temp sensors, one is to the gauge the other is cylinder head temp that the computer reads to know when to open the thermostat, when you place the thermostat in water to test, it won't open enough (fail safe only)

How to test a thermostat for Mitsubishi Fuso Tractor head (6M70 Engine Model)

Put it in a pot of water and heat to boiling. The thermostat should start to open at about 180-190F. Just before the water boils (at 212F), the thermostat should be fully open.

That's a quick test. Your thermostat is set to open at a certain temperature, like, for example, 185 degrees F. If you know the rating for it, you could use a thermometer in the water, and see if it starts opening at the rated temperature. It may help if you suspend the thermostat with a piece of wire in the water-so it doesn't touch the hot bottom of the pan. If it touches the bottom it may skew the results just a tad.

Code p0128

This fault code indicates the thermostat has failed open. Do you have a temperature gage in the car? If yes, is it showing colder than normal? If yes, recommend removing the thermostat to see if it is open. If open, replace thermostat. If closed, suspect your temperature sensor may have failed.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5929960-s_thermostat for checking the thermostat, and let me know if you have questions.

Why it called DexKILL
Your best bet take it to a qualified repair shop !
Once the thermostat kicks in the temp lowers which is great. I know we have to replace the thermostat The thermostat doesn't kick in , it opens !!!! And if the temp. goes down when the thermostat opens ,it's working ! The redish clay looking stuff is rust , air got into the system . You probably have a bad radiator cap . Now you need a compleat cooling system flush !
Your heater core is plugged .

Thermostat will not open

If the top radiator hose is not getting hot you know the coolant is not passing the thermostat. The last gentleman to answer you is probably correct. The thermostat must face the correct direction for the hot water to open the thermostat.

Thermostat

It should open when it gets up to the opening temperature. Better way to test it is to put the water in the pot, hot from the tap, and put it on the stove. Put a thermometer in there too so you can monitor the temp. Drop in the thermostat, then heat the water on the stove. When it opens, note the temperature that the opening occurs at - then you can see if it's opening at the correct temperature. If you put it in boiling water, it'll open - but you won't know if it opened at the right temp.
