Question about 1997 Saturn SL

1 Answer

1997 Saturn SC1 48,000 miles. Battery light is on and the vehicle will die out when driven over 15 miles. Auto Zone tested the alternator and found it to be charging properly. Replaced the battery, but the light remains on. The car will start to chug and sputter at around 5M RPM when not in gear.

I have a 2005 Saturn Ion. It has been hard to start as of late. Today it would not start at all. It makes a clicking sound followed by a low whir noise. The lights come on as does the radio. What do you...

this sounds to me like your battery is dieing. keep in mind that your starter draws a lot of amps and your radio and lights do not. your best bet is to take your battery out of your vehicle and down to your local auto zone or advance auto and have them charge/test it for you. this costs nothing and they will be able to tell you if you have any dead cells in your battery or if it just needed a charge. if it turns out that it just needed a charge then you most likely have a bad alternator. once you get home with the freshly charged battery and start your vehicle head straight back to the auto parts store to let them check your alternator for you (also free) hope this helps

Recently replaced my alternator followed by my battery in the same day. Was driving the car ( same day) and battery light would come on and go off. All lights dimmed and vehicle died. Could not re-start.Do...

Yes, your alternator is faulty based on your discription . However before young out and replace it, make sure all connections are hooked up good and alternator belt is tight. If you have a amp meter tester , you can test the out put. I bet 5 times a month I am helping customers with same problem. I can not believe these part places can not seem to build decent alternators and starters. This seems to be getting worse and worse over the years. I had one customer last year, that had to put on 3 before found one that actually worked. I would replace alternator( should be at least a min of 30 day warranty, if you just bought, but the require your bad one of course in trade. Thanks, hope this helped you. Mike from fixya

The battery light was coming off/on..then all the inside lights dimmed then the car died out and anti lock was coming on and not letting me change gears

The alternator is most likely faulty. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. connect jumper cables to the positive post and the Engine frame. Start the vehicle. If the vehicle starts, disconnect the negative jumper cable. If the vehicle dies, and most likely will, remove the alternator and take it to Auto Zone and have it tested. If the vehicle doesn't die out, replace the battery.

Car wouldn't start...

The alternator is bad. Your accessories like that are driven mostly on alternator power, and as soon as it goes out, everything goes haywire. You should pull the alternator off, and have it tested at your autozone, and when they tell you it's bad, then you can go ahead and get the new or remanufactured one to replace it with. The alternators on these vehicles usually go out around 60-70000 miles almost like clockwork, so if it's original, I would definitely expect it.

How do I troubleshoot the charging system?

test battery and alternator battery may be loosing charge or alternator output enough to run vehicle but not enough to keep battery charged some auto stores such as auto zone/advanced auto can bench test both for free

I have replaced alternator two time and need another

take it to a dealer or a local shop because it sounds like you have a wiring problem. Try this first, start the car and remove the positive battery cable and if the car dies it is your alternator or a wiring problem, if it does not die that it is more that likely your battery. take your battery into advance auto parts or auto zone and have your battery tested. i would do the same with my alternator also.(Just to be safe)

Alternator keeps going bad - three so far. Battery light flickering off/on now.

You have probably been getting 'rebuilt' units which is not bad in itself but if the rebuilder received a batch of bad diodes they may have these failures until they are exhausted.
But, buddy, you ain't broke my record yet; a lousy Saturn (LAST GM I will own!) bought new, ate SIX (6) alternators in 57,600 miles. That wasn't the worst problem; it ate the auto tranny at 31,000 and dropped a rod cap at the above final mileage.

Battary light on , engine cut off car won't crank

sounds like it's your alternator, your alternator charges your battery and runs car once it is started. if you have a bad alternator your battery light will come on, and shortly after your vehicle will die, unable to restart without a jump. I would take your battery to autozone or an auto shop to have your battery and alternator tested.
