Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

I have a 98 VW Golf (ABA engine) it keeps stalling at idle. I saw that it might be the mass air flow sensor, so I unplugged it and it smoothed out and ran great. I replaced the sensor and it still stalls. Can someone please let me know what this is??

Try cleaning throttle body with throttle body cleaning fluid. You can pick this up at any auto supply depot. Just follow the instructions on the spray.

It starts but as soon as it's put into gear acts like it wants to go but quits.

Could be a few things. But here are the obvious. Check for a vacuum leak around the intake. When you put the car into drive it starts putting strain on the engine, a vacuum leak will give it too much oxygen and cause a fuel mixture issue / reading.
If nothing wrong there, you may have a bad throttle position sensor. When you put the car into drive and it starts putting strain on the engine it will pull the idle down then the sensor will adjust it automatically. Hope this helps.

99 Eclipse 2.4 cid idles erratically and eventually stalls. Unplug the air flow meter and idle quality gets much better and does not stall. Does this mean I have a defective air flow meter? Engine codes...

couple of possible problems

first thing i would check is to make sure air intake hose between Mass air flow sensor and intake doesn't have any cracks holes make sure clamps are tight

secondly check for vacuum leaks carb cleaner works great for this spray around intake gaskets throttle body fuel injectors vacuum lines when spraying u notice change in idle (if idle picks up or stubles) that where your problem is example you spray around intake gasket and idle picks up you have bad intake gasket

third thing is to try and clean the mass air flow sensor they make special cleaner for this (u can use carb cleaner for this but it can leave residue on sensor and damage it so it not recomended)

my best guess for you with all three o codes is you have a vacuum leak somewhere

My vw beetle stalls out. the mechanic first told

If it was the mass air flow sensor, you will have a check engine light. The small rubber hoses connected to/from the mass air flow connector might have come loose or have a crack, which will cause compression to be too low. Check there before replacing the maf sensor.

Replacing mass air flow sensor in 97 vw jetta

If the mass flow sensor was bad, the check engine light should of came on giving off an engine code. To remove the mass flow, disconnect battery neg cable, then pull of the wire harness and pull out mass. You will probably have to remove the air intake hose.

My golf 2001 tdi after 3000 rpm sometimes he cuts the acelerator

Could be a few things. IS the check engine on? Could just be a bad mass air flow sensor. Or a seized wastegate. Yuo can start by trying to unplug the mass air flow sensor. If it runs better it could be just that. Just make sure to remove and clean the lower air filter box change the air filter and the snow screen which is located next to the battery where the air enters. These always are blocked. If it runs ok (not perfect change the mass air flow.
