Question about 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

2003 Avalanche front end shake

Whenever I hit any size of bump or pothole, even a slight hump in road, the front end begins to shake badly, like a tire is out of balance. Only does it when driving speeds less than 50mph. I've rotated the tires, had them balanced, and also had an alignment done, still have the problem. The truck also has a 6" lift, 17" wheels, and 33" tires. The truck has only has 40,000 miles on it. My father says its probably the ball joints? Any ideas EXPERT?

I would check your ball joints it's a good chance one might be bad also you can check your sway bar linkages, swaybar frame bushings

End front shaking


I would remove one end of the steering stabilizer (if you have one) which looks like a shock absorber laying sideways attached to the steering linkage and pull and push on it.It should be stiff to move.
Also have the tires dynamically balanced on a motorized name brand wheel balancer.Next have the front end alignment checked with the normal load you carry in it.Not enough caster in the alignment can cause a shake/wobble easily.

My 1989 Chevey Celebrity started shaking the other day the front part of the car, not like the front end is messed up but it shakes.


Could be a wheel, tire, or axle shaft.
You could rotate the tires front to back and see if the vibration moves.
If it does the problem is one of the tires or wheels.
If it stays in the front, its probably one of the axle shafts. It could also be a hub bearing or something loose in the suspension. But a loose suspension part would normally show up when you hit a bump rather than on a smooth road.

Front end vibrates between 80-100km/h. am sure its not the brakes as it does not happen when i brake .


Good Morning This is usually a broken belt in one of your front tires. sometimes you can physically look and feel your tire and see where the belt is broke because it will be like a small lump on tread surface. If you have hit a bad pothole or bump in the road will cause this, or its possible to have lost a wheel weight and an out of balance tire will also cause vibration in the front end. I am assuming that below and above this speed you dont notice any vibration and if so i would go to your tire guy and have him look at the tires and check for a broken belt and or balance the tires if no signs of tire damage. I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. There is a "violent" vibration that occurs only when you are going 40-60 MPH and you hit a bump or pot hole on the highway. The front end begins to...


Vibration from about 40-60 mph is usually attributed to wheel balancing, but the onset when you hit a bump seems to indicate play in the steering linkages (tie rods etc) or suspension members and stabiliser bar rubbers but you had that all checked out, that brings us back to the wheel balancing.

My car is shaking really bad, feels like I keep hitting bumps, even when I'm not...when driving down the highway if I let go of the wheel, it moves itself back and forth really badly...feels like it is...


SImple solution would be the wheels need to be balanced.

Not so simple solutions are
(1) tires that have delaminated the tread or some other failure (Very bad, could result in a blowout, need to be replaced)
(2) Need front end alignment
(3) Rim bent from hitting pothole or curb.

If tires look ok, are not worn out, and don't appear to need replacing, I'd start by getting them balanced. Most places you buy tires today offer road hazard & lifetime balancing, so this may not cost you anything if you return to the place you purchased tires from.

Once on the balance machine, they should be able to determine if items 1 or 3 apply. That just leaves item 2 to consider.

Steering wheel shakes when i hit bumps


Bad shocks will cause the front jump around. Also check the tires for uneven wear.
The entire front end should be looked over if the shocks are bad you may also have other parts worn as well.

I have a 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 which when I hit a bump going over 20 mph the entire front end shakes so that you have to pull over for it too stop. It doesn't shake just going down the road if you don't...


I had a truck at work that did the same thing. Only if you hit a pothole. In my case the front tires were way out of balance. Hope it's something that simple.

Steering shakes violently when I hit a bump


I had the same problem and it was a small shock sitting horizontally called the steering stabalizer your something close to that. Eazy fix.

Whole truck will shake intermittently at various speeds


Hi JeffM123,

I had a similar problem with my Blazer.

Those are 42" Super Swamper TSL's. Six of them. All professionally mounted and balanced.

There are four shocks on the steering stabilizer.
Three shocks on each front wheel and two on each back wheel.
14 all together. And at times it could still shake your teeth out.

Why?
Every once in a while (more often than I like) the treads of all the wheels are in the nearly the same position (for lack of a better term, rotationally synchronized). No big deal in itself.

At a certain range of speeds (there was an upper limit that it stopped) which would vary by type of road, they would start to generate a harmonic resonance.

It would start as a hum, then vibrate, then start some serious shaking. It was setting off car alarms at the mall.

Sometimes, while cruising at hum speed, I'd hit a pothole or rock in the road. That would skip the vibrate phase and trigger the shakes without warning.
  • If I slowed down, it would stop.
  • If I nailed it and got past the upper range (bounce barrier) before parts started flying off, it would stop.
  • If I increased the tire pressure, the shaking wouldn't start until a much higher speed was reached.
  • If I decreased the tire pressure, the shaking pretty much ceased completely. It also made my already unimpressive mileage plummet even worse.
  • The easiest solution turned out to be turning or changing lanes. During any turn, the front wheels travel a different distance than the rear wheels and from each other. This brought them out of sync (for a while) and stopped the resonance.
How this may relate:

You mentioned a 20" wheel/tire package.

What kind of tires? Are they strictly highway or are they of a more aggressive nature?

They don't need to have fist sized lugs to resonate.

Let me know if my description sounds/feels like what you're experiencing. If so, forward make/model of your tires. I can check for similar occurrences, histories and most importantly, other solutions.
