How do I replace the alternator belt. I can't find the belt tensioner mechanism to release the belt

Posted by on

  • garyhelf Sep 29, 2010

My Diamonte is a California car and the belt is different than shown. There are only four places of contact....the harmonic balancer, the idler, the AC pulley, and the alternator. There is no tensioner pulley

  • garyhelf Sep 29, 2010

Thank you, I will try this. It seems strange that a California car would be different in non exhaust issues..Gary

Cars do not have the tension adjustment mechanism. It is done by loosening the alternator or tightening it. Loosen the mounting bolts of the alternator and you will have to belt loosening.

Sorry, it is not the mounting bolts but a bolt on the slide that the alternator is attached to.

  • Rinoo Kumari Sep 29, 2010

Or if there is an idler.

SOURCE: How do I release belt

Hi,according to what year you have.Look for either an adjusting bolt and through bolt at the alternator.Loosen both and push the alternator back.If it has an extra pulley look for a belt adjusting bolt close to this pulley. You have to loosen the bolt that goes through the front of this pulley.(the bolt that holds the pulley to engine). Then turn the adjuster to loosen belt. Some of the later models have automatic belt tensioners. You have to put a wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt and relieve the spring pressure.I hope this helps!!!Please rate this answer. Thanks and Good Luck!!!

SOURCE: how do I release the belt tension pully to replace serpentine belt

You can run down to your local auto parts store and buy a serp belt tool. Or you can take a 3/8 drive ratchet, locate the 3/8 square hole in your tensioner and put the ratchet in the hole. For more leverage I put a deep socket over the ratchet handle and put a long 3/8 extention in the deep socket. This will provide ample leverage and will save buying more tools you do not need. Simply move the tensioner to the direction that takes pressure off of the belt.

SOURCE: how do i release the tension on the serpentine

Here's how to get a serpentine belt on or off (You'll need to do both). It's easy and doesn't require a prybar.

On:

  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • Locate the tensioner pulley. It's one of the smaller ones and is mounted on a spring loaded arm. It's job, as the name suggests, is to keep the belt tight. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done

Replace serpentine belt

Removal & Installation

  1. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt.
WARNING Never suddenly let go of the tensioned idler pulley. The force of the spring pressure suddenly released may damage the idler pulley mechanism. Always release the spring pressure gradually.

To install:
  1. Route the belt over the pulleys making sure all the grooves in the pulleys and the belt line up correctly. Refer to the accessory belt routing section of this manual.
  2. Rotate belt tensioner clockwise and slip drive belt over idler pulley on tensioner.

If for any reason, the tensioner is crooked, replace it!!! Also, install the belt with the writing facing you like you are trying to read a book. This WILL (a trick I learned at Mercedes) prevent even a new belt from squeeling!!

Release tension alternator

There is a belt tensioner that is easily moved by using a socket & ratchet. This will release the tension on the belt allowing removal of same. It is approximately in the middle of the belt. Good luck!

You may have a self tensioner which applies belt tension with a spring.

Look for a spot to put a 1/'2"drive breaker bar on it and release the belt tension, then slide the belt off and install new belt. You may need a helper to remove the belt while you hold the tension off,
