Question about 1993 Mercury Tracer

Car idles fine but when I am done accelerating and at a cruising speed running between 2000-2500 rpms car begins to **** like its either not getting enough gas or too much. I have cleaned out throttle body and replaced spark plugs. Still same problem.

Hi,
Replace the fuel filter as the fist action.
If not much difference, check the fuel pump in the tank, and any cables to it because you might also have blockage in it as a result of dirts or particles in the fuel tank..

If your Windstar has the 3.8 liter engine, you are due for head gasket replacement. Just had mine done. The cruise control failure could be due to an open fuse or speed sensor failure.

High idle unless driving in gear, but if clutch is pushed in or car is in neutral rpm goes up to 2900


run fault codes to check for accelerator position sensor problems . Check for vacuum leaks. If cable accelerator then check that the return spring on the end of the cable is attached and not missing.

Sounds like 2nd gear in the transmission is slipping. Cars usually shift at 15-20 mph from first to 2nd. First check the trans fluid.

You might have this problem:
Recall 84V106000: Possible Accelerator Cable Wear POSITIONING OF THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL CABLE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT COULD RESULT IN ABNORMAL WEAR TO THE CABLE. THE CABLE COULD BEGIN TO FRAY AND UNWIND.
