Question about Ford F-150

1 Answer

Recently my check engine light came on. When I had it checked I was told that it was something to do about gas, the technician said many times it is just a loose cap, which he said seemed to be on tight. He turned it off and the next time I filled it it came back on again. When I fill it all the way I can smell gas for a short time. My biggest concern is that I have to get my emissions test soon and I fear my truck will not pass. I was hoping to get just one more winter out of it, so I don't want to spend a lot of money on repair nor do I want to start new payments as of yet.

How to check codes on 95 stealth

Your local shop should do this for free. If not drive to the next one until you find one .
If I read correctly you want to make your engine light come on? A good way to do this is by taking your gas cap off. this may not work.

Was told the check engine sensor needs to be replaced will this affect the mechanical working of the care if it fails?

There is no check engine sensor. The check engine light is controlled by the ECU (computer). There are many sensors that send signals to the ECU. If one of these sensors is telling the ECU that something is not right the ECU will set the check engine light. Whoever told you the check engine sensor needed replacing does not deserve your money. Take you vehicle to another trusted technician and have it diagnosed. If it is running perfectly then there is no hurry, but you do need to find out what is wrong as some problems can cause the O2 sensor or the Catalytic Converter to fail. Just depends on what the problem is. Even a loose gas cap will set the check engine light.

If you are a DIY'er you can get a OBDII scan tool that connects to your laptop that can tell you the error code and allow you to reset your check engine light. This will save you $80 each time over going to a mechanic for a diagnostic. They are easy to use and will help you know what the issues are if you do have to go to a mechanic.

Sometime the check engine light comes on if you did not fit your gas cap tight enough. You need a code reader to find out the error code to help solve your problem.
If it is something simple (like a gas cap) and you do not want to get a code reader to find out what codes (problems) your vehicle computer is saying there is. You can try disconnecting the negative battery lead for 5 minutes. This should reset your check engine light. Drive and see how long it takes before it comes back on - this may help you pass the smog inspection...

replace your gas cap and clear codes, then wait and see if light comes back on, if it does you have a more serious problem like a fuel tank leak or a defective fuel tank pressure sensor.

Vsc/traction and check engine light (orange lights) click on after about 5-10 sec turning on the car

I have the same problem on my 2001 4Runner. I have been told and also researched that it has something to do with the fuel pressure and making sure the gas cap is on tight enough. The solution I have used...with minimal to disconnect the battery which resets the VSC/traction/check engine light. Sometimes I can go two months without it coming back on and sometimes it comes back on in one day.

I wish Toyota would do a recall on this because it is more annoying that mechanically troublesome.

I had a problem also w/ the ck engine light and was told to click the gas cap when putting it back on after a fillup.

Problem never returned.
