Question about Oldsmobile Aurora

4 Answers

The battery on my 1995 Olds Aurora keeps dying. Have had the battery and alternator checked. Both are fine. After jumping the battery, the car runs fine. After sitting at home for a day or so, the battery is dead. After sitting at the auto repair shop for several days, the battery has not died. Also, after running numerous tests, the shop has been unable to find any cause for the battery drain.

Thank you for your fast and extremely thorough answer! We've verified that nothing's being left on. Battery is only 9 months old and has been tested. Alternator also has been tested. This leaves us with an electrical short, which is what the electrical mechanic at the shop (and I) believe it to be. Though I couldn't swear to it, I'm assuming he has tested everything you have mentioned. It's a place I'm familiar with and trust. They refuse to accept any payment unless they find the problem - so, I'm sure he's really looking. I was just hoping someone might be familiar with a problem particular to the 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora. One that may be notoriously difficult to find.

Just an update on this 95 Olds Aurora - V8, by the way - Never did find the problem. Have checked everything that anyone has been able to come up with. On the bright side, have had the car home for a couple of weeks and it has been starting every day. However, we have also been sure to run it every day. Prior to that it had gone for days w/out running at times. Will keep you posted if we ever discover what problem is/was, in the event anyone else is running into this.

This is a tough one! Check for anything that you might be leaving on some of the time.
Take out one fuse at a time for the accesories, such as cigarette lighter, stop lights, interior lights, any thing that works with the engine off. This is a long process, but with patience it will find your trouble.

You are lucky to have such a mechanic. I do not know anything off hand, but I will look at your wiring diagrams to see if there is anything unusual about your car.

Betcha it's your rear air shocks (auto level control is standard on Olds Auroras) . When they wear out, they bleed down and trip the automatic level control, which starts an air compressor to pump them back up and level the car. The air compressor is connected directly to the battery so it will run without the ignition being on. This happened on my 1995 Olds Aurora

It will be on the drivers side under the car in front of the rear wheel next to the gas tank.

Transmission or altenator?

I would say change the alternator out. Start with the simplest and cheapest factor first. Without the alternator keeping the engine running its hard to put it any gear.

Jumpstart 1995 oldsmobile aurora

I'm not sure if the Aurora is a special type of car that requires a different way of jumping, but when u jump start most cars, you place the red end of the jumper cables on the positive/ red side of the battery and the black end on the negative. You want to make sure the jumper clamps are touching the metal part of the battery post (so if there's covers on the battery posts, move them so the cables have good connection. The same procedure is used on both cars. Be careful not to touch the end of the cables together, as doing so will make them spark if one end is connected to the running vehicle. Let your car charge a minute then try to start. If it starts, let it charge for 5-10 minutes and run/ drive your car after disconnecting to make sure the battery does not die the next time you shut it off. If it does not start after a few minutes of charging, adjust the clamps to make sure they have a good connection, wait 2-5 minutes longer & try to start your car again. *It is normal to hear the car that is jumping you idle more quietly when your car starts pulling juice from the charged battery. Also, remove jumper cables after charging, making sure not to touch the ends togther- as it will spark again. *it is not necessary to shut off the car that's jumping you before attatching the cables, or after charging. If your car still doesn't start after repeatedly adjusting cables and trying other cables to see if it is the cables not working, you may need a new battery or alternator. I would have the battery tested to see if you need a new battery before considerring the altinator.

My battery will not keep a charge on my 1995 oldsmobile aurora. the alternator is not bad

You may or may not need to replace the battery. To check if it is a drain from one of the systems on your car; unhook the battery overnight and see if it kept the charge till morning. If it is still charged in the morning then it is not the battery.

New battery. abs, battery and service engine lights come on. all headlights and tails flicker and car dies and wont start. jump it let it warm up and doesnt do it for awhile. then at some point it does it...

These are all signs of a bad alternator. The car is running off of only the battery. The alternator charges the battery and keeps the car running. When the alternator quits charging the car will run fine until the battery dies. Then you can jump the battery and charge it, and the car will run fine until all of the electronics and lights run the battery down again.

2003 olds aurora charging system low volts

The alternator is most likely the problem, it isn't putting out enough of amps to charge the battery, but enough to keep it going which won't last long. Before assuming the battery or alternator, try your battery connections for corrosion or tightness. If you live close to an auto parts store they can check the battery and alternator to see which is the problem. The battery will not hold up long if running lights at night or other power consuming things.

What is the style of battery that goes in a 2001 aurora? my car tatally died and did not have a light on of any sort but was able to be jumped but then totally died again. would you say it is the battery...

Sounds to me like charging system.(alternator) But make sure you check any big fuses under hood for being blown, which may be alternator or charge fuse.
