Question about 1999 Ford Escort

2 Answers

1999 ford escort, runs great but when first started white smoke pours from exhaust. My daughter 1st car that she bought. It has over 150,000 miles. It ran great the 2 times we test drove it. The morning after she bought it and started it up it smoked horribly. Then the air quit too. I think we got taken by the guy. Any ideas what it could be. Someone told me to get some Lucas and we did. It still smokes really bad. Im a mom not a mechanic. Shes spent all of her savings for a car to go to work in.

No good new there
I wouldn't recommend purchasing any vehicle used, with more than 30 to 50 thousand miles, just me.
Lucas, is a mom and pop company, with apparently excellent marketing skills. Son Lucas, runs a top fuel NHRA dragster and owns another team. They may have some good products, but I have never and won't likely ever use any. No product I know of in a bottle fixes anything. Having owned a trans shop,I would recommend Lubgard's Products, only, nothing else.
The White Smoke is an indication of coolant being drawn into the cylinders and exiting the exhaust. It could be an intake gasket or a head gasket.
May get lucky, sort of,and just be able to get it fixed.
There are a few ways to test compression, cylinder leakage, coolant issues, such as yours. You will need a good repair shop. Be part of the process, and go there before and during any work you authorize, and see what is taking place, don't just leave it and hope they know what their doing. Have them so you and explain test results

Unfortunately, it sounds like a head gasket. If it only does it when you start it, it is probably leaking antifreeze into the cylinders slowly, and as the engine heats up it will close the gap. If this is the problem it is only a matter of time before the head gasket goes completely and the engine will need to be repaired.

I havue a 1998 ford escort sport When I first start it it blowing out white smoke It doesn't smoke anymore while driving My idling is high to 2000 rpms My car okay?

white smoke can be water in the exhaust if you park with the rear end facing up hill it will store water in the cat and take a few miles to clean out. 2000 rpms is a bit fast. should be around 800-900 rpms. it could be a sticking idle control. take it off and give it a good clean out.

White smoke out of exhaust

Regarding 2001 audi a6 quattro 2.7t....i was driving to work the car was fine then white smoke starting coming from under the hood and tail pipe. i stopped veilce and alot of oil was dripping from front of car. I towed it home and i looked under the hood and there was oil from valve cover gasket. i let the car sit for a few days, had it running again for a good hour and no white smoke was coming out. I removed the valve cover and gaskets are all bad. i want to know can the valve cover gasket leak cause the white smoke to come from exhaust pipe?

CEL blinking smoke coming from exhaust, rough idle

White smoke is indicative of burning coolant. Gray smoke is burning oil.

Have a compression test done which will often give an indication of evolving head gasket problems. If the coolant level is going down, and there's no obvious leak, its a head gasket.

That is a sign of blown head gasket or a crack in the engine block. There is coolant getting into one or more cylinders.

Changed O2 sensors and white smoke starts pouring out of exhaust

White smoke is usually steam which would indicate a blown head gasket or crack in block. Hope it's something easier.

Zx2 98escort idles fine no smoke when u start down road pours white smoke

Hi Sherry, If the smoke is a whitish blue grey, Best observed while standing behind the car and while parked with the parking brake on and asking a friend to run the engine at about 2500 RPM. If the smoke is evident then it probably means that the piston rings are worn or damaged and the engine needs to be rebuilt or replaced. If you have had any overheating problems, it could also be a blown cylinder head gasket, which to repair is also a major job. Regards John

I have number 2 and 3 cyl miss fire. Also white smoke comming from exhaust.

if u have white smoke in exhaust along with two cyl misfiring that are next to each other more than likely u have a blown head gasket (the white smoke means u have coolant going into the exhaust )

Ford escort when strts blows blue smoke

Most generally when an engine smokes on start up it is a sign of worn valve guide seals. If this engine has over 150,000 miles on it and/or it has ever been overheated it is very possible that the valve guides themselves may have escessive clearance and are the cause of the valve seal leak. These vehicles have a history of cylinder head problems and if this is determined to be the problem, the only true repair for it is to have the cylinder head rebuilt or replaced. This process can cost upwards of $900.00 to $1,200.00 to do so you might just put up with the problem until it become unbareable. Always be sure to keep the engine oil full and changed on regular interval of 3 mos/ 3,000 miles and use Lucas oil stabilizer to help minimize the oil useage .
