Question about 1996 Lexus ES 300

2 Answers

I can't get the key out of the ignition on my 96 lexus ES 300. The car is in park, we've moved the steering wheel back and forth and the key just won't release all the way to the left and come out. Any ideas?

I had same problem with my 97 lexus es300 after replacing my expansion valve it is your neutral safety switch it is quite expensive but just to get by for now you can take the wood trim out around shifter and your ashtray one connection(white) is for your neutral safety switch disconnect that untill you buy the new one so you dont have to keep on disconnecting the batt. to get the key out.

What could it be when I can't get my key to turn the ignition ... my car was parked at work and when I returned to start it after work it wouldn't turn and my steering wheel wouldn't move.

It is possible that the steering lock is applying so much pressure on the key lock it will not turn. Try turning the steering wheel one way or the other way and then try turning the key.

My key will not turn once I insert it in the ignition.

Try moving the steering wheel a little bit in each direction. If the column is locked it may prevent the key from turning.

The ignition key will not come out.

If its not turned all the way to the off position try moving the key around while you turn the wheel back and forth, there is a lock mechanism in the steering wheel to prevent stealing the car without the key. Also make sure the shifter is in park, if the steering wheel doesnt work put some pressure on the shifter towards park and move the key around.

Turned steering wheel after powering off cuz I am parked on a hill...it locked up and now the ignition is locked too...how can I start the car?

your steering wheel lock is connected to ignition in column, pull hard on steering wheel in direction wheels are turned at the same time turn key, this should free them both up.

My 92 ES300 will not allow the key to turn in the ignition, car does not start. not battery, or check engine light and I have turned the wheels as I an turning the key, wheel not locked. What can I do?

I have a 1992 Lexus ES 300 and I have discovered that there is a security mechanism, that once activated, will not allow the key to turn all the way--preventing ignition.

Wait for about half an hour to an hour and it will go back to normal.

Locked steering wheel.

If your key won't turn, you can move the steering wheel back and forth until it does or try to hold the steering wheel to the left or right while turning the key. This happened with my car when I parked with my wheels turned in. Now I make sure the steering wheel and my wheels are straight when I park.

My ignition switch is stuck on my lexus es300

It sounds like you need to replace the ignition switch. This happened to me about a year ago on my 1999 ES 300. Usually part of the ignition is stripped or broken so the key can't move. It's a pretty easy fix, you have to take off the plastic dash cover so you can unscrew the ignition switch and slide it out. The problem you'll have is when you put in a new ignition you'll get new keys with it. The ignition key will be different than the locks on your car. I have to carry two keys now, kind of a pain, but cheaper than having your locks rekeyed.
