Question about 1991 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

Hello, My 1991 dodge dakato was running great before I changed the spark plugs & wires because they were old. Now, it seems to be running not nearly as good. It seems like their is a loss of power or hesitation. I know the fire order is correct. I even gapped the new spark plugs. It has a v8 5.2 engine. I was wondering if it could be that the new wires has such large boots on them, they are touching one another. I also changed the cap & rotor and it still is not right running. The first time I changed the wires & spark plugs though the check engine light came on with a code 24 which I have a scanner (throttle sensor) but I did not mess with that. Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Mess with the TPS( Code 24)
The center wire, is the sensor wire or output back to the computer.
One of the two outside wires,is 5 volts coming to the sensor, and the other goes on and on to other sensors.
If you probe one outer wire at a time with red lead of a VOM and black to any metal (ground) you will find one with 5 volts. Leave your probe on it and move the blk to the center sensor wire.
Move the throttle and see if you have 1volt closed, close to 5v open.
May end up putting in a new sensor. 19 years old.
No issues with what you did so far, wires, etc.

I have a 1987 Dodge dakota and can't get any spark?

You need to see if you have voltage at the coil with the key on.
Make sure the check engine light comes on when you turn the key on.
If not, check the ASD relay in the engine compartment.
You will need a book and a meter to test the other components.

you can check for spark by plugging in one of your old sparkplugs to one of the spark plug cables and letting the sparkplug lay on the bare metal of the engine. Turn over engine to see if the spark plug is producing a spark. No spark? Check under the distributor cap, take a look at the rotor for damage.

Ovberdrive on my dodge dakato 2000 quit

You will have to check your OD relay and fuse. Then take a peak underneath at the overdrive solenoid. This should have a single wire connected to it and it will be about the size of an old Tomato paste can. Put your hand on it and have someone else push the overdrive button with the key in the run position but, not , running. If you feel a clicking or tapping motion, you may want to remove the solenoid and clean the throw rod with a aercsol spray such as carb cleaner or even better Brakleen because this one leaves no film. At the worst case, you'll have to replace the solenoid.

1991 Dodge Grand Caravan dies while driving won't restart

If it sputters or hesitates while driving I would suggest a new fuel filter. If it runs smoothly and just dies out you may have a fuel pump which needs to be replaced because it is going bad. If fuel pump relays or other types of relevant fuses are blown it would not start at all. Your mechanic could also pull a spark plug and check for a blueish white high voltage spark if it has an orange or reddish tint that would denote a lower voltage spark normally from a worn out coil pack, spark plug, plug wire etc. Through advanced engine diagnostics you can have your vehicle connected to an oscilloscope or a cylinder dwell meter which can cancel out spark to each cylinder to check for function. However your best bet may be the fuel pump, if your vehicle dies again check to see if your vehicle is getting any fuel first then you'll know for sure.
