Oddly enough if the lights get power and work when grounded, then all the door switches that act as grounds must have gone bad at the same time. Although most interior light also have a switch directly on the fixture that allows being turn always on or always off, as well as working when the door ground switch is opened.

What controls the inside interior lights

Voltage to the coil of the courtesy lamp relay, dome, reading lamp, courtesy lamps, cargo Lamp, instrument panel (IP) compartment lamp and the underhood lamp is supplied from the Inadvertent power relay on CKT 1732. The inadvertent power relay receives voltage from the CTSY LP fuse which is hot at all times. Ground for the courtesy lamps goes through the courtesy lamp relay. Both relays are controlled by the body control module (BCM) based on inputs from door jamb switch, dome lamp switch or door handle switch. The BCM will supply a ground to the courtesy lamp relay when closing any one of the above switches to ground. Ground for the reading lamp, cargo lamp, IP compartment lamp and the underhood lamp is supplied by its own ground.

Cargo lights on 2000 C2500 are not working. Have power from switch to the harness. The bulbs are new. Brake lights work. Dome light also works. Only getting about .7 volts to cargo bulbs. Thx for your...

Did you check the voltage to the bulb connectors or from the power side of the connector to a body ground? If you checked it to the bulb connectors and get .7 volts, then the ground wire is probably bad. Checked it to the body, the the power wire is bad. If you checked it to both, the the power is deffently bad.

On 97 dodge 1500 I cannot get dome or cargo lights to work with headlight switch and already tried another switch...dome lights come on when I open the door though

This means that the dome light is getting power and grounded by the jam switch. by turning the headlamp switch it has a detent position once there this should ground the dome light if it doesnot work the grounding wire from switch to body is loose or broken.

Cargo light doesn't work

They are part of the dome light circuit, so if the bulbs are ok you'll have to check the wiring fuse and switch.

The rear cargo light won't turn off. This happened after I replaced a rear turn signal tail light bulb and a fuse for the horn. (These went out at the same time.) When the blinker light and horn were...

Hello! The instigator of this problem appears to be the the rear cargo lamp; Official name is rear dome light. You'll need a multimeter set on the X10 ohm scale to shoot this trouble. Leave the rear dome light bulb out. There are two switches involved; #1 the rear dome light on/off. #2 the right hand front door switch.

Pull the horn fuse out, remove the rear dome light cover, drop the rear dome light down to access the wiring and close all doors on the vehicle. Connect one lead of the ohm meter to the white wire and the other to body ground. If you read any resistance one or both of the two switches (dome light switch or right hand front door switch) is remaining closed when all doors are closed. Next disconnect the black lead from the dome light switch and see if reading changes to zero. If it does this is indicating that the dome light switch is defective. If it does not, disconnect the right hand door switch and take another reading at the same location. If you still measure any resistance, the black wire of the rear dome light is shorted to ground, if not then the right hand door switch is the culprit.

The reason the right hand door switch and not the left hand door switch is involved is the fact that opening the left front door would turn on the front dome light as well as the rear light. If both dome lights are staying on with all doors closed I would then involve both door switches in this test procedure. If your vehicle is a four door model then disconnect one door switch at a time while performing this test procedure.

The horn fuse also supplies power to the rear dome light, and I suspect the two events are related.

Check under the hood, in the fusebox, for a fuse label ctsy (courtesy). It'll be over the driver side wheel. Replace it, if blows and, you have a wire touching bear metal somewhere. Good luck!
