Question about 1993 Dodge Dakota

3 Answers

I drove my truck two miles and then when I went to start it again it wouldnt turn over or make a sound. we roll started it to get it back home but now it wont even start when trying to jump it, despite me installing a brand new battery. the wires are exposed under the steering wheel (no plastic covering) so I dont know if I could have somehow bumped a specific wire that connects to the starter or something.

Try jumping the solenoid. (Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5821173-doesnt_car_start_gasoline_engines . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.)

If that works, trace the start wire back to the ignition switch. There are several components in the circuit--starter relay, 40 amp fuse that powers the ignition switch. Also, safety interlock switch supplies the ground to the relay. First check the fuse in engine compartment, then the safety switch at the clutch pedal. You can defeat the clutch switch by pulling the connector off and shorting the terminals together with a paper clip (just be careful not to start it in gear). See tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6022358-relay_check to troubleshoot relay. Diagram below is for automatic, but you can substitute the PARK/Neutral sw for clutch sw.i drove my truck two - 0f68f95.gif

It's in or on the steering column. when you put the key into the ignition and turn it. the ignition engages the ignition switch. If you have to, go to a auto parts store and have them show you what it looks like. Two screws hold it in place and it has a wire connection. The part isn't too expensive to replace.

If the isulation on the wires under the dash are bare... that is BAD...
consult your local mechanic and ask him to take a look at it... sounds like a fire waiting for a place and time to happen to me.

thanks man, maybe i wasn't specific enough, its not the wires that are bare.. I just mean that I can see them all.. I mean that the big plastic covering that would normally hide the electrical and the steering wheel shaft is missing... is there still a problem with that? but regardless, i'm wondering if theres a simple connection that I could have knocked loose that would prevent me from being able to start the car from a standstill or if theres anyway to test if it could be the starter vs altnerator (if any)

2002 ford windstar first wouldnt start, jumped and started, drove 200 miles and turn

You need to have the factory security system scanned, it is most likely locking you out due to a fault.

My truck wont go over 35

Could be a lot of things I would start here. If the engine is shaking at idle or not it maybe the spark plug wires. easy way to check start the truck take a spray bottle and spray a mist on the wires to see if the truck runs worst make sure you stand back while doing this so you don't get shocked.

You have a possible issue with the voltage regualtor inside of your alternator.
You can drive to Autozone & have them test for under voltage & overvoltage condition, appears to be a voltage regulator failing.

Let me know how it turns out for ya!
Good luck to ya....

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.
