Where is the starter for a 1996 saturn sl1 and is it easy to replace, and also how much would it cost if i was to take it to a shop and replace it?

It is replaced from under the car. The starter is located at rear end of the engine, it goes into the transmission bell housing.

I have a 1996 saturn SL2 dohc can you tell me why sometimes it will start and then sometimes i will try to start it and it acts like it is trying to start but never turns all the way over

Bad ground will do that. Check battery terminal first, then the second place to check is grounds on the side of the motor where transmission bolts are. Then the starter itself can be corroded right where it lays against the motor, where it is bolted on. This can happen due to too much oil running down on it as well. Last of all the starter can be bad. It is best to have it diagnosised first before guessing at any repairs though.

Location of the starter in 1996 saturn sl2

open the hood. just to the left and below the battery you will see a bell shaped housing bolted to the engine. this is the bell housing which contains the flywheel and connects the engine to the transmission. the starter is on the back of the engine, bolted into the bell housing so its gear can mesh with the gear ring on the outside of the flywheel. that should give you enough info to find it. the starter was always fairly easy to replace on old V8s, however you will find the starter replacement on the S series saturn to be very difficult, especially if you do not have a lift. if you are bound and determined to do it yourself make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable first.

1. Raise the front of the car and support on jack stands.
2. Remove negative battery cable.
3. Crawl under the car and locate the starter.
4. Remove 13 mm nut securing power cable to the starter and pull cable to the side.
5. Remove 10 mm nut securing the ignition wire to the solenoid and pull wire to the side.
6. Using a ratchet with a 13 mm socket and 6" extension, remove the 2 bolts securing the starter to the transmission.

Were is the starter located on a 96 saturn sl? and how is the easiest way to get to it

The starter is underneath on the driver side. If you are going to do it yourself then I recommend you jack the car up on that side.

The starter is on the back of the engine, it is held to the engine block by two 13 mm bolts. One bolt is visible on the bottom of the starter, the other you will have to feel around behind the starter for. The first step in this job is to disconnect the battery, that way when you remove the battery cable from the starter (13mm nut btw) you dont have to worry about it grounding out by touching the engine. There is another, smaller wire atached to the starter solenoid that will be either an 8mm or 10mm nut.
