You have a bad tentioner pully ... it is loose and so allows the serpentine belt to slide off.

Serpintine belt will not stay on

Something is not turning correctly. Could be a water pump or a loose tensioner. Check to see if everything is easy to rotate...alternator, power steering pump, A/C pulley water pump. Do this with the belt off.

How to remove serpintine belt

Release the belt tensioner and the belt will virtually fall off the pulleys. Make a sketch of the route of the belt before you do that as it can become confusing when you try refit the new belt.

New serpintine belt won't stay on the pulleys

Check your belt tensioner. There is a gauge on it with a 'pointer.' If the pointer (indicator mark) is out of the range of the markings on the tensioner, it is shot and should be replaced. It would explain why the belt won't stay on the pulleys.

I have a 2000 VW Beetle - the battery light came on this morning will driving to work (5 minute drive) and by the the time I got to work, the power steering wasn't working. Any ideas?

Sounds like the serpintine belt that turns your power steering pump has broken or came off of the pulley.

You should see the problem when you open the hood.

If the belt was slipping or became contaminated with oil or coolant that should resolve the problem. Check the belt tension first before replacing the belt
