If you look on the passenger side of the transmission you will see a switch with about six or so wires coming out of it. That is your neutral safety switch. Since the majority of starting is done in park that part wears out first. R&R is a bit complicated because it needs adjustment etc when installing so I recommend you get a haynes or chilton manual to guide you through the job. The switch itself is around $220. so I recommend you try to get one from a scrapyard (far cheaper)
Don't throw the old one away...you can carefully take it apart and clean it up ...re-use it later if you need to. When removing it, use lots of wd40 or other good solvent and use some care and patience...they often get corroded onto the shaft.

Your shift linkage is misalligned enough to fail to properly engauge the neutral safety switch ?

Maybe the switch is worn out enough to cause this to happen 35% of the time?

Try to push the shifter UP further as you try to crank the engine when this happens.

My saturn sl1 2001 seems to not know it is in park so it won't try to start. Is there a switch I need to fix?

try putting it in neutral and start it, but it sounds like you need to replace or adjust the neutral safety switch

I have a 2002 Escape, sometimes the gear indicator on the dash puts a box around park and reverse at the same time and it wont let me start it until i take it in and out of park several times and the box...

does the gear shift lever that you change gears with seem loose and has a lot of movement up and down until you can get it to the shifting point or is the lever snug and normal tight feeling to it either way a think your neutral safety/range selector switch maybe broken inside this switch will stop the car from being started in any gear except neutral or park for safety reasons and this could be what is happening here normally I think the box should go around any gear you have selected P/R/N/D etc. to show you what gear your in and for overdrive purposes , but it's showing up around 2 selections at one time and the car won't start this is telling me inside that the switch has somehow become broken and this part of it is reading the wrong position then once you move it around a few times it locates itself in the right place and the car starts get a new neutral safety / range selector switch hers what it looks like its on the transmission
2002-escape-sometimes-gear-indicator-egfwkdwwkv4lskpyxjwsfau4-1-0.jpg
the center part with the 2 notches fits on the transmission and don't have a fit when you first put it in and the truck doesn't start this has to be adjusted by someone under the car while you try to start the car your original one maybe can be adjusted but I think it's n/g because it's showing 2 positions at the same time depending on where you buy it the cost will be for aftermarket $20.-$45 for an automatic transmission $65- $85 for a manual one the dealer will be over $100-$150 I hope this helps and please post back with progress or results and please rate me positively good luck stephen

I have a 93 crown victoria and it runs great but more often when I put it into park it doesnt want to start again. I have to reput it in park 3 or 4 times.

Bad PRNDL switch(park/reverse/neutral/drive/low).May be adjustable,but most likely the switch is bad.As a temporary/free solution,try starting in Neutral(USE YOUR PARKING BRAKE!)

Mazda 6 won't start; battery is ok & headlight is ok

Test the neutral switch.

===

Foot on brake

MOVE SHIFTER BACK FROM PARK AND NEUTRAL 10-20 times. This will re-new the metal contacts.

Shift to netural "N"

Start engine

Put lever back to Park "P" to warm up the truck.

====

If it start from neutral and not park then you will need a neutral safety switch.

Will not crank with key but can get starter to hit by crossing it over but will not start

Lots of possibilities. Key switch, security system, solenoid (if that model has a separate solenoid) would top the list of likely suspects.
