5000 miles is a good interval. Many people change there oil too soon (regularly at 3000 miles).I like 3000 to 6000 but it does then depend on the type of driving. More frequent oil changes in city driving, at much greater intervals if highway driving (traveling/trips). I decide using two factors if the oil is really dirty I change it. If I am down a quart I change it , unless it looks clean than I add. If your oil looks good at 5000 mile intervals , listen to the truck, it is a good system and it is easy to keep track of. Still check your oil level periodically in case it gets low. One last thought , I do not like leaving oil in for 10,000 miles. I have tried it , but realized that the reason you dump your old oil is to get the dirt and acids out of your engine. The oil may still be as good as new but the dirt and acid needs to go. Therefore I do not recommend extended oil change intervals.

If it is synthetic oil,it depends on what you used. Some are good up to 12K miles. If it is the synthetic and the normal change is at 5K,that should be fine.I am not sure if it is a pre-programmed refernce from the odometer which will turn on the light, but the only alternative would be something which would be able to measure the viscosity of the oil(yet another current unnecessary component to fail in the new technology age, like a check engine light),but I do not think or at least hope that it does not exist. You could call a dealer to see what makes that light come on if you want but if you have 5K oil,5K oil change is fine,if you have 12K oil,12K oil change is fine.Just check your oil level every 750-1,000 miles.
Good luck! Greg

How many miles before oil change is needed

I drive quite a few miles in my 1998 LEXUS LS40 and have religiously changed the oil every 5,000 miles (and rotated the tires). Im pushing 185,000 miles on it now and I am due to change the timing belt a second time next weekend. That being said, I have never had any issues with the engine changing the oil at a 5,000 mile interval. I use the standard synthetic blend oil at the local quick stop type oil change places.

How often does the oil need to be changedin my Lexus RX350. I drive about 40 mi/day - highway

Oil is cheap, compared to lubrication related repairs, I suggest that you consider every 2500 miles, as it is a round number (kind of). Manufactures have been extending change intervals, but most cars actually run under severe service, mostly due to shorter runs. You sound like better sceneario, the issue is contamination.

Oil changes help.

How often to change the oil

it depends on what type you are using if you are using conventional oil (regular oil) i would change it every 3000 miles if you are using synthetic then you can go over 6000 miles.of course the sooner the better for your engine.

I have a 2006 Mazda Tribute. Can you tell me what the recommended time is between lube and oil changes. Is it 3000 miles or 5000. Thanks

It used to be every 3 months or 3,000 miles but some manufacturers are suggesting that 5,000 miles is ok. My view is that it does not hurt the motor having more oil changes. I continue to have them done every 3,000 miles myself even if my oil life indicator has not come on. Clean oil is very important to have a engine last for many miles. There are some full synthetic oils that can go for 5,000 or 7,000 miles beteween oil changes but cost alot more than the standard oil.

What is engine oil type, 2001 durango 4-wheel 4.7 engine

You can use any of the following weights of motor oil: 5W30, 10W30, or 10W40. Personally, I use Mobil1 Synthetic 5W30 in my pickup. Synthetic is better for your motor (you can go 5,000 miles between oil changes with synthetic oils) but once you start using it it's better if you stay with it meaning every oil change you use synthetic oil.

Which oil is best for my 2007 4runner 35000 miles

Well, I can tell you the grade is 5w-30.

Non-synthetic you need to change the oil every 3,000 miles.

Full synthetic, you can go a little longer on oil changes. Like 4,000 to 5,000. Better for higher demand engines. Like hauling trailers and stuff.

As far as the brand, personally I like Valvoline. Other people have different brands they like. But, that just mine.

What weight of oil is best for summer use in Iowa

5W-40 is what the manufacture calls for. The heat out side will not make a difference since the engine's temperature is moderated by the cooling system. If you use synthetic oil, you can go with out changing from 25,000 miles to 17,000 miles or 1 year but you do have to replace the oil filter every 7,500 miles to 5,000 miles. For conventional oil it calls for oil and filter change every 5,000 miles or 4 months which ever comes first. Hope this helps. keep me posted be glad to answer more questions.
