First, to keep driving will only do damage to the engine if it is the catalytic converter is plugged. You can tell by running the engine and taking a short drive around the block, get out and look underneath the vehicle. You are looking for any part of the exhaust that is glowing red indicating a plugged/defective exhaust. Second, you don't go to a salvage yard for something like this. Go to a trusted exhaust centre and they will be able to weld in a new one. Usually between $125 and $200. Not uncommon for these engines especially if they have not been tuned up in a while. Let me know if you need anything else.

Turned off overdrive on 2000 town car to climb hill then exhaust got loud popping inspection is passenger side firewall down the block somewhere?

May be the exhaust manifold junction with the exhaust pipe leaking. Check the EGR valve gasket for leakage also.

Loud exhaust

While this could be a simple bad manifold gasket, I have had the down pipes go bad on these cars. If the engine is a 2.2L, the parts should be readily available at a salvage yard for not too much $. I've also had the exhaust pipes rust through where the pipe from the manifold joins the catalytic converter.

All of a sudden my engine sounds like a diesel, never did that before, someone said it needs a water pump, anyone hear of that?

Water pumps go bad and begin to leak water. If that is not the case (and bad water pumps rarely make a loud noise unless the bearings went really bad) I would check to see if the exhaust manifold is cracked by listening with the hood open to see if you can locate the noise in the area where the exhaust comes off the engine block.

Burning rubber smell whilst going up hill

This sounds like an oil leak. Look for leaks at valve covers, and other areas above the exhaust. It often is the burning off of this small volume of oil, that makes the smell like you describe. Inspect the whole exhaust...Something is melting, somewhere.
