However, it is still shifting late and hard, though, and we need to try to get it fixed before winter hits us for real (we live in Iowa). Any ideas what's going on with the transmission and how to fix? What could be

There is a vacuum line that runs down to the transmission to the modulator. Either the vacuum line has came off on one end or the other. Or the modulator on the transmission is bad. It has to be one of the two.

How much oil does the front axle take on my 1990 Chevy 2500 4x4 truck and what is the likely cause of the 4x4 no actuating

well you fill front pig untill it comes out the fill hole, if i remember it was like 3 qts. I gave my 90 sierra to my dad about 4 yrs ago and dont remember what the 4x4 acted like. I thought it had the floor shift and direct linkage to transfercase. does yours have manual hubs being a 2500? if so its possible the hub grease is to thick and when it gets cold it is to stiff to let the gears mesh.

check your wheel speed sensor to make sure it is operating correctly if it is bad it will send signals to tranny making late shift and causing hard shift

Chevy suburban has a ''first 5 minutes'' knock

All kinds of things can go wrong after a flood so thats hard to diagnose through an e-mail. Your shift solenoids are on the valve body in your transmission. Your computer shifts the tranny. More than likely you have a 4L60E.

1993 chevy 4x4 auto trans shifts hard 1st to 2nd

check fluid level AND condition...should a red color...if its discolored, in any way, flush it and change the filter too...then perhaps there is a band that is out of adjustment allowing the flare up, and it suddenly grabs getting the hard shift....or else trans is worn out....check the fluid
