IF THE PLUGS ARE GETTING OIL ON THEM, THEN ITS TIME FOR AN ENGINE REBUILD,(check your air filter for signs of oil blockage first,as this engine has a possitive crankcase system.)

ticking noise is the lifters I am thinking without hearing it but I would try some stp oil treatment add it to your oil the other services you talked about like flushing out the radiator my cause you to start losing water or burning it the trans fluid change wouldn't hurt

If you are having a ticking noise at start up, and have tried numerous other remedies to fix it then you may need to have the oil filter changed. The filter has a "valve" that keeps oil at the top of the engine. If this "valve" goes bad or weakens, the ticking comes from oil not staying at the top and the engine ticks until oil reaches the top end.

Noisy valve lifters

Hi, not sure from that end but how many km you have on that car, cose if it done 100,00.000-120,00.00 km You realy should pay attention or replace your timing belt, cos the noise you hearing could be from there not your valves, but if not changed in time the damage from that could escalate on that car to anywer $2-3 K, eazy. Anyway it just a thout 4 you. G/luck.

Drove my '99 Stratus through high water & wont start 2 weeks later

If water went over the hood and into your air cleaner there's probably water in your engine. change your oil. Pull your spark plugs, leave them out for a few days to let any water in there dry out. pull your air cleaner, if it's wet, throw it away and get another one. After a few days pour some Marvel Mystery Oil into your spark plug tubes or spray PB Blaster (encase your pistons are rusted to the block)

This may not get it working, if there was water in the engine when your were trying to start it you may have bent the valves, water doesn't compress.

However I would do these things before condemning your engine.

I just replaced the head gaskets. My car is timed at top dead center. It's getting gas, spark, but wont start. What should I do?

Sounds like the timing is still out. Are you sure it was at Top dead center on the #1 cylinder on the compression stroke? If it was on the wrong stroke when you did it, then it would be way out.

To ensure its on the compression stroke, remove the spark plug and place your finger over the hole. Get someone to tick the engine over until a rush of air comes out of the cylinder. That would indicate the compression stroke.

Ticking on '05 Chevy Equinox

THE TICKING NOISE IS VALVE LIFTERS.MOST OF THE TIME WHEN ENGINE OIL GETS DIRTY NEEDS OIL CHANGE.DIRT GETS IN LIFTERS THEN CAUSES THEM TO BE NOISEY.IF LIFTERS STAY NOISEY ALL THE TIME.THEY OR WORN AND NEED REPLACING.ITS NORMAL FOR CAR TO SMOKE A LITTLE WHITE SMOKE IN MORNING ON START UP.LONG AS IT DONT KEEP SMOKING IF SO.YOU HAVE HEAD GASKET LEAKING.

Ticking sound could it be my lifters or valves

One Way to find out is get a spark plug wire pulse indicator (its actually pretty cheap). its a device that looks like a short pen with a scoop in it for laying spark plug wire into it. the spark from the coil has such a high voltage that not all of it can be contained. The Indicator actually uses that spark to make it flash in sequence of that one spark plug wire. Check each wire until it flashes in sequence of that "Ticking" sound... if you can get it in sync then the chances are high that it is the lifters. Then rev the engine lightly and see if it stays in sync. This rules out any strange noises coming from an alternator or a belt making that ticking noise. And if you do have a noisy lifter it doesnt mean its the end of your engine. You could put an oil additive with each oil change to "Soften" the impact which will also quiet the lifters more if it really bothers you. Some cars actually have noisy lifters when its due for an oil change(this could come in handy). i hope this helps you out a little bit.

3.1L engine ticking noise

This a piston slap. GM recognised this problem years ago but instead of repairing 100,000 motors they call it "normal". If it goes away after warm up you should be ok to keep driving it.
