If it has good power on the highway, it is not the timing chain. How fast will the car go? Is the engine light on?

It has full power on the highway and even going through town. It only wants to die when idling. The engine light is on but has been for several years. They don't know why it stays on.

Hmmm...do they scan the OBD II connector and cannot find any codes? If the light has been on for years, there may be new codes stored. Autozone and Advance offer free scanning service. Do you have these stores in your area to get a free scan? If yes, please have them write down the trouble codes for you and report them back to us.
Do not bother with the timing chain until we know those codes.

The car runs great at any speed. Runs very well until I stop at a stop sign or light or just sit idling anywhere then wants to die. Doesn't happen until the car warms up. No problem when it is cold.

OK, but there are still a lot of things that can cause this. That's why we would rather give you specific tips based on the trouble codes. Cheap Repair has recommended cleaning your idle air controller, which could solve the problem. If you want to do that, it's worth a try, but I still think you should get the trouble codes. :o)

pimp4882003, I recommend you look for vacuum leaks. Check all vacuum hoses coming from the intake manifold, trace them to where they end. Replace any hoses that might be leaking. Also check the intake manifold gaskets by spraying them with carb cleaner or ether while the engine is running. If it revs at all when you spray the gaskets, replace the gaskets. OK?

You have a device called the idle air controller. This controls the idle speed. You can clean it out with spray carb cleaner. This may cure your problem. Also replace the PCV valve.

Sounds like a 2.4 Quad four engine? If so the chain has either different colored links marked links that have to be aligned with the marks on the cam gear[s] and the crank gear.A chiltons book will show you how.

What do you mean by high mileage on a 2003 chevy cavalier as far as a timing chain having to be replaced? My cavalier has 173000 miles on it- does it need to be replaced? Or do I wait or what?

Here is the scoop
Went to another web page, says the 2.2 and the 2.4 are non-interference systems.
So when the chain jumps, the car will stop, but you will not damge the valves.
So drive it till it stops, then change it, it's a big job that you may never have to do.

How to replace water pump on 2.4 chevy cavalier

This is a job for the dealer or cerified mechanic. The front cover and timing chain needs to be remove to access the water pump mounted behind the engine. The pump is driven by the timing chain and timing will need to be reset using special tools.
