You need to take the front dash all apart to replace, its very time consuming and can be very frustrating. It may be worth the time and money to have a mechanic do it.

You can try Car fax.com, they might have that information. If that does not work, then it's going to be a drive to the dealer with your ownership so they can reprogram the Mercury a new code for you. Sorry, but it's a liability thing. Good luck
