Question about 1992 Ford Explorer

Theres play in my front drive shaft. I dont know if its the u joint or the rear end going into the transfer case. what is the most in expensive way to fix problem. problem is when braking accasionally feel slip in when accelerating from park position hear a clunk ,clunk. problem I have a tight budget and this explorer is starting to nickel and dime me alsohave to replace blender door which I cant afford

The cheapest way would be to remove the front driveshaft I guess... This will give you opportunity to inspect the Ujoints too!
If it is only a Ujoint... you can replace the Ujoint and shaft when you have the money to do so...

What is a cv shaft


Dear Dianne,
Under the front hood of your Honda is a motor or it is also called an engine.
The engine is hooked or fastened to a large container called a transmission, which is also under the front hood.
In order to get the car to move, there are 2 steel drive shafts going from the transmission to the front wheels.
These drive shafts are about one to 2 feet long, and each one drives a front wheel. That is why there are 2.
These steel drive shafts have a large joint at each end of them, so you see why there are 4 joints.
The joints attach to the wheel on one end and the transmission on the other end.
These 2 steel drive shafts are called cv shafts because they have a CV joint at each end, and these CV joints are a part of the shaft assembly.
The CV shafts "transfer" the movement of the engine to the wheels.

I have a 1996 astro van. Front drive shaft moves to the transfer case. Nothing from transfer case back. Is there a clutch in the transfer case? Any help would be greatly appreciated.


The front drive shaft moves when the truck moves.. This is a "All wheel system" NOT a 4 Wheel Drive system.. Yes there is a clutch pack in the transfer case that is supposed to send the power to the wheels as needed. for traction. Make sure you keep all the U joints lubed and in good shape.. these are very expensive drive shafts. You really did not tell us the problem.. possibly the truck does not go ?. in which case it could be a bad transfer case or possibly a broke output shaft on the trans. except for the output shaft and rear housing these transmissions are the same as the 2 wheel drive models.post a comment and let us know what you find, By the way check to see if there is any fluid in the transfer case..

Transfer case troubleshooting


I would look at the u-joints before looking at the Tcase. Lift the front end (both wheels) off the ground at same time, crawl under and shake the front drive shaft. up down side to side. If it's tight the let front end down and get the rear end up in the air (both wheels) off the ground and do the same this to the main drive shaft. If the rear U-joints are failing (closest to the read Diff) take a real good look at the Diff. Make sure it's not leaking fluid, If it is you may have a bad pinion starting to go out also.

is that joint right there a U-joint or CV? Anywho check for play at that joint, There may be a little at the slip yoke, where the tailshaft comes out of the transfer-case , but nowhere else should have any. If those joints are loose: replace U-joint While your under there you might as well check the front drive-shaft also.

best bet is junkyard replacement. worst case. remove tc and get a longer driveshaft to the rear end

After driving and coming to a stop i put gear selector in reverse and the transfer case grinds also when decelaretion above 65 mph the case grinds till i reach 20 mph


Make sure you check the fluid, and also, grab your rear drive shaft at the yoke where its connected to the transfer case, and try to move it up and down like you want to pull it out. If there is any play, your input shaft bearing may be bad.

If you wiggle your front shaft where it comes out of the case same scenario. Your output shaft bearing may be bad. If you have no play, be sure to check your universal joints, and also when the case starts to grind, play with the shifter a little bit. Could be linkages as well.

If none of that pans out, you have something broken in the case that is getting trapped in the gears. That is very unlikely unless there is no fluid in it.

How do you remove the front drive shaft in a 1995 jeep grand cherokee limited


Use white paint, chalk or a scribe to mark the relationship of the front U joint to the front diferential pinion yoke. Mark the relationship of the rear U joint flange to the transfer case companion flange. Unbolt the front end of the drive shaft from the pinion yoke and the rear end from the transfer case companion flange and remove the drive shaft from the vehicle.

How do you get the front driveshaft out of 2001 chevy 4X4


Remove transfer case shield. Remove clamp on boot
where front drive shaft meets transfer case. use a flat
screwdriver to pry free end up and release clamp. (you need a special clamp tool to reinstall clamp )
Remove 4 bolts at differential end that hold U joint Retainers to yoke. Slide drive shaft to rear enough to clear yoke. then let drive shaft drop so it clears differential and slide forward until it come off transfer case shaft.

When i get to 55 mph i hear i popping in the front.Ive replaced both cv joints and a wheel bearing,but it didnt help.Iinspected the spider gears but they were fine.I disconnected the front drive shaft now...


Check the front differential for proper spacing inside, also the bearings. Then check the homocinetic joint right behind the front diff. on the drive shaft. If all of them are fine, open the oil screw at the transfer case, drain the oil and check if there are some metal in it. After draining the oil out, use a flat screw driver, insert it into the transfer case (be careful!!) to locate the drive chain. check if there she is very loose ( if you can slide the chain more than 1/2" it need to be replaced). To rule out the transfer case, disconnect the rear drice shaft (U-Joint on rear diff. and then slide them out of the case), disconnect the front drice shaft right on the transfer case (U-Joint), disconnect the shifter and any wiring you find on the case, remove the bolts from the chassie and then remoce the bolts between the case and the auto transmission and slide the case backward till you have it in your hand. Install a new or rebuilt one the same way back, fill it with auto trasmssion fluid as told in the user manual. Do not overfill the case and do not use other fluid as in the user/service manual.

Vibration if front end, had a alignment new tires,speed balance,new rims,shocks,even changed the universal joints. When you get over 45 mph it starts the faster you go the worst it gets.


If you could rack the truck and run the rear wheel at the speed untill you feel rhe vibration you might be able to isolate it, I agree, it may be a drive shaft issue, have you checked the u joints for wear, all of them,?
