On my 2002 Chevy 1500HD the 4WD isn"t working. I have replaced the actuator and the switches. What next?

Is it a two wire actuator or a three wire actuator? The two wire ones are pretty unreliable. that is why Chevrolet converter them to the three wire. Check for power and ground on the two wire in 4wd. For the three is should have one ground wire, one wire that is hot in 4wd, and one wire that is hot in 2wd.

check all wire conections also replace the actuator on the front axle but check for power there first if you have power replace that switch as well .

Having the same exact problem but with my 1999 escalade. Thought it was the actuator bought a new one installed it transfer case would engage but front end wouldnt lock. Took it out of housing left it plugged in got a friend to go through all the 4wd for me and the plunger never moved out the actuator. Checked my wiring harness which is a four prong ann it had one hot prong like it is suppose to. Traced wires even replaced dash switch same problem. Taking it to local dealership tom to have it checked for codes. I was told it could be the transfercase actuator even though its workin that actuator is what sends power to the front to engage the actuator to lock the differential.

Chevy trailblazer 4wd is not engaging 4hi blinking and service 4wd light is on


There are two actuators that activate the 4WD components, one is for the Transfer case modes and the other is for the front axle disconnect. Both of these actuators make a distinctive noise (motor noise) when activated. First thing to do is with engine off and ignition on, switch from 2HI to 4HI and listen for two distinctive noises. If you hear both, more than likely the front spline disconnect assembly (at the front axle) is defective.
In order to troubleshoot the 4WD system, you need to have an understanding of the whole thing, it is not a DIY item.

maby im wrong but if you rev up and only rear wheels spin that means that it might be 4 wheel drive but not constant 4 wheel drive or diff lock system ,,,, ,, in 4 wheel drive all wheells will turn together but if pressure of slip is bad enough or torque high enough only 2 wheels will drive ,,, thats why diff lock locks wheels together in each axle to over come this ,,, all wheel drive like in landrover locks all 4 wheels together to ensure all wheels rotate to give best grip

Transfer case stuck in 4wd


Your encoder motor is broken or your front diff actuator is stuck try checking your fuses then pull your actuator is it working? Shift it in 4 wheel while parked listen for it to shift if it doesn't make a shifting sound most likely your encoder motor. Most likely one of those problems if not gonna have to open up your transfer case and inspect for problems might be your linkage to your shift forks if your shift selector sprocket isn't turning when your motor shifts could make sense why it is stuck in 4 wheel drive.

Front axle does not engage. Push 4hi or 4lo button, transfer case motor engages front drive shaft, front diferential actuator extends, but no 4 wheel drive. What do I check next?


There may be vacuum lines running down to the hubs. If so check them for vacuum when engaging and dis-engaging 4 wheel. If you can't feel any vacuum, trace lines, and check for leaks.

that could be a bad, loose or misadjusted "neutral safety switch" .. in some the brake has to be applied before starting .. that would involve a brake safety switch ..

I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 8 cylinder 4wd extended cab. It has the push button shifter for 4wd. When I try to use 4WD Auto or 4WD Hi, the indicator lights come on but the 4wd does not engage. I read...


Fuse is located at the end of eh dash on drivers side and the Actuator is located at the front differential and on the passenger side.
When in 4wd mode, a switch on top of the transfer case conducts 12 volts out to the actuator. Wire #50 (brown) is the 12v feed, and it conducts to the light blue wire (#900) to the actuator.
When shifted out of 4wd, the switch opens up and no voltage goes to the actuator.

Check voltage at the connector for the front actuator (at the front differential - it looks like a large bullet that threads into the front diff.) If it has 12 volts, the actuator is the problem. If it does not have 12 volts, check the transfer case switch and the power feed to the transfer case.

I'll assume it is the actuator, if the plug to the actuator is getting 12 volts when in 4wd.
The way this actuator works, is it is a sealed chamber that gets heated by voltage. When it heats, the pin in the end swells and pushes a shift fork in the front differential. The shift fork engages a spline on the passenger side of the differential, and boom! you have 4WD.

GM offered an upgrade to this actuator that is a motor instead of a heated device. However, it requires a small harness addition, a spacer, and a new actuator. It is about a $150 to $200 option.

Good luck. The actuator is usually the problem 90% of time but recheck all of the wire harness just to maker sure there is no short before replacing any parts. The actuator may not be fully engaged or disengaged and the fork to the spline may be what is causing the grinding.

If 4wd Tahoe, it is the CV joint going out or is out, replace part about 250 bucks, very common in 4wd Tahoe

2002 1500hd 4wd will not shift out and locks switch up. switch has been changed and not been in 4wd very much


i am assuming that this has the push button system in it. under neath the front end is a actuator wich as as a relay to deliver the message from the cab(switch) to the transfercase if that relay is out or not funtioning that will cause this to happen. test the wiring plug at actuator for power if it has power then the actuator is faulty. this system is similar to the lever linkage but with this you dont have a linkage it all relies on electrical circut. good luck let me know what ya find
