Your brake shoes are warn down to the metal. get them off of there fast or you will be turning the drums too. Hopefully you are in the squealer stage still, they put a piece of metal in there that hits the drum first as a warning. to you. get them changed.

Most likely your rear brake shoes are worn down far beyond the min limits and you now have metal to metal contact, which causes the grinding noise, overheating and poor braking. You most likely will need to replace the drums. The other rear wheel will probably be the same.

Grinding noise

if you've had brakes done recently there may be a loose part or chunk of dirt or rust stuck in the rear drum-take it back to who did it for you and ask them to open it up and inspect-cheers Denny

What is the grinding noise on my 2003 Grand am front wheels, help please?

There are many things the grinding noise can be. I would start with the breaks though as that sounds like the most likely culprit. If they are grinding, odds are you have ruined your rotors and/or drums. This means that you are looking at about $50-$70 in new parts per wheel (Total of $200 to $280) to replace, assumming only the pads and rotors/drums needs to be replaced.

Please note that breaks can be a good DIY project, but this takes an intermediate skill level with some expereince. Some vehicles are easier than others. Drum style breaks can be especially tricky as they relie on a system of springs that can be challenging to work with. There is also a hydrulic system that can have issues. If you see break fluid when you take off the wheels and drums, you have much larger issues and I would recommend getting in touch with someone more qualified.

I believe you have drum brakes on the rear of your Caravan, & it sounds like you have a wheel cylinder leaking, it will have to be replaced. This is what it looks like. Parts & labor to do a rear brake job should run around $220.00....Shop around and get a few estimates. Good luck, i hope this helps.

Drum brakes causing intermittent grinding noise

Sounds like one of the springs that hold the rear brakes in place broke. Jack her up, pop off the tire, remove the drum and take a look. If you need to see what a good one looks like, look on the other side.

This is not a very common problem, but I saw it last year on a 69 chevelle.

Good Luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Noise from offside rear wheel when turning, it sounds like a bearing but we don't think it is that, its not really a 'knocking' more of a scraping, grinding sound. Its not continious, seems to occur mainly...

Have the front brakes checked alot of times the brake pads wear down to the point that the wear warning indicator starts to rub on the rotor or disc and makes a scraping sound when turning, your front brake pads are due to be replaced, I am 80% sure.

Right rear wheel has rubbing and grinding noises, as on cast iron

My advise is to adjust the rear brakes. The drum should not move in a side to side fashion. adjusting the brakes will also more than likely take care of that anti lock brake light also. adjust the brakes up to where the rear wheel will spin but you should be able to hear the brake show dragging slightly on the drum.
