Question about 1995 Volvo 850

1996 Volvo 850tdi 2.5 estate (UK)

No problems most of the year, however; when weather is hot and car has been driven for an hour or more; if you stop and turn off the ignition the car will not start again. If you leave it for about one hour, it starts fine.
Vehicle has had several Volvo Dealer Specialists diagnostic checks, but they found no fault codes or anything which points to the problem.
Volvo does about 35k per year and is serviced every 6000 miles. This problem occured several times last year in hot weather and was checked for faults at the time. Several parts were changed with no success. Car usually runs as good as new and the Volvo Dealer states that all round, it is in much better condition than many newer versions.
This is really frustrating me as I use the car daily for my job.
She has done 233,000 miles and I would like her to make 250,000. Having spent so much on her (Volvo Dealer's are not cheap) I am determined to get to the bottom of this.
Please help - she is a lovely old gal.

Should have said - she is a diesel injection. Have spent £700 at Dealers looking for a fault.
If it was vibration, why would it only occur now and then on very hot days?
The Dealers told me they had one like several years ago with a fault like this which they could not find a fault on and the owner just abandoned it in their forecourt.
Apart from regular service only major thing changed was timing belt & adjuster; and this has been done many times.

Fuel pump has not been replaced. Will give it a go. Are there any other tests for a fule pump fault?

  • maisyboo May 24, 2008

The started turns over as usual, then the car fires but just dies - going urrrrrrr.

  • maisyboo May 26, 2008

    Will do.

  • maisyboo May 26, 2008

Had new idler pulley wheel & tensioner fitted prior to fault occuring. Could this have any effect?
Contacted Volvo; they said they used Vida system to diagnose and read DTC's (gobbledy gook to me?)
Running fine again now the weather has changed - however; starter does seem to be a little slower and slightly noisier. Never noticed before as usually radio is left on.

Hi,

Could be anything from ignition/cam timing sensor, park neutral position, wiring harness loosing contact when hot, and many others. Apparently this issue has happened to some others.
This might be interesting if not informative.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Has the fuel pump been replaced recently? Alot of times you will not get an error code for a bad fuel pump. I have a CPI Blazer fuel pressure is 62psi so if you run tank empty you will destroy the pump. Here is a simple test... get yourself a can of starter fluid next time the car doesn't wanna start spray 2 squirts right into the air intake and see if it tries to fire up... If it does act like it wants to start then you know its a faulty fuel pump.

Wow if the fuel pump hasn't ever been replaced I'd go with that. I know volvos have a rear access hatch for fuel pumps so its pretty easy to change unlike my blazer which I have to drop the fuel tank lol. I have replaced my fuel pump 3 times in my blazer... seems to be able to do about 75k miles before it burns up a fuel pump.

Let me know how it turns out... funny thing is this week now I have to replace my fuel pump lol. I have the correct fuel pressure but not enough fuel volume... serves me right I ran truck outa gas other day... it died when I turned a corner... I got it started back up and went to the gas station and now pumps acting up so I fried it.

Mmhhh things that do not work when it is warm: all electronics

If when you turn ignition from hot, the starter motor runs, then it is probably the spark distribution, which is electronically controlled. At Volvo authorized garage they should have test for all electronic parts, did they test the control board?
If the starter motor does not run at all, then it is probably the ignition block to be replaced.
If it is not heath related it can be a lose contact disconnecting when you use the car, due to vibration, in this case explore the ignition wirings.
Get the Haynes manual for your car if you intend to do any work by yourself, otherwise contact a qualified mechanic.

What happens when you turn ignition, does the starter motor run?
If it does not engage ignition at all it is the ignition or the electronic.
If motor runs when you ignite, on may model the distribution is electronic controlled and can be the problem. I have had similar problem on Peujeot and BMW, even if just intermittent, not heating related.

1996 Volvo, starts great till I turn it off and it won&t restartfor several hours.engine turns over fine, what could be the cause?

Well, you changed everything, Now you have to go after the fuses, relays, ignition switch and wiring. Wiring I would rule out, because it works when cold. So I would check all the fuses, pull them out, most likely good because everything works when cold. Pulling them gets rid of the corrosion problem. Then pull the relays, swap them, where you can. This will narrow down a bad relay. Some thing won't work after it gets warm/hot. besides a no start. After all that, I would go after the ignition switch. they do go bad and do a lot worse than your problem.

Volvo s70, 1998, heater not blowing hot air

Are you getting coolant flow through the heater core? These cars have common problems with heater cores but they are easy to replace. IPD has a Video on U-Tube with step by step instructions. Also if you are in very cold weather have you checked your anti-freeze? I saw a Toyota last year freeze completely because of no anti-freeze. It took days to thaw out the heater core and they were lucky that the ice did not blow it apart. It took me hours of starting it and running up to a low temp and shutting it down to get it drivable.

Volvo 960 gle estate self leveling suspenstion 1995 model. car lying low onto wheel arch when not loaded

IF self leveling (gas struts) are faulty, when you come to a stop after driving for about 10 mins, the rear will not have risen to level.(still low).then they will need replacements fitted, they are not that expensive, compared to some air suspension types.(just in case im not clear, the rear pumps itself up AFTER moving off/driving and will settle when stopped for awhile after.)

There is moisture coming out of the AC vents on my daughters 2006 s40, usually during very hot weather and not until the car has been driven for several miles

The drain on the evaporator is stopped up,look for it directly bellow the ac lines ,where they go into the car, under the hood,it will be on the bottom of the blower box,use air pressure to blow into the drain to clear it out.

My 1996 Hyundai Accent Auto will start perfectly from cold but when i have driven sometimes even short distances in hot weather and turn off car it will not start again for sometimes over 1 hour. The...

Seems to me it's the engine coolant temperature sensor or the connecting wire to it. Some Model/Year (MY) hyundai's have TWO (2) temperature sensors.. one for the instrument panel/gauge, the other strictly used by the ECU (Engine Control Unit)... if this sensor goes bad, it sends the wrong data/signal to the ECU and this can affect engine performance.
