Sounds like a faulty / intermittent Earth connection. Check all the battery and earth leads where they connect to the Battery, Engine, Starter Motor and Body. If possible disconnect, clean thoroughly by removing any corrosion or paint that could cause a poor connection, and reconnect making sure all are tight.

    did this - and removed

I also sounds like a bad starter motor Try tapping the starter with a hammer or tyre lever while the starter is operated. If it works then it means that the brushes in the starter are worn out or the solenoid is not making proper contact to switch the high current required. Auto electricians will usually have exchange units available for replacement.

thanks for info - but - jeep was towed back to shop - cost another $260 for some stupid plastic part that was inside steering column - battery

  • bcstarz Nov 10, 2010

This has happened 2x now to my 1997. The part is not made anymore, making it even harder to fix. I am looking for a work-around for this (i.e. - toggle or push-button switch). This plastic part is an "ignition hard-start" enabling the key to turn all the way to engage the starter.

Take it to a shop. U fu--ed up royally doing the swap. If you had done the job correctly you would not be having this problem. Decent thing to do at this juncture is help your buddy pay for the correct repairs.

Wont turn over

The starter is most likely the problem, tap on the starter lightly with a hammer while trying to start the engine, dont get run over doing this it will take two people,if the engine starts, the starter needs replacing.

Replaced battery about a month ago. After about as

Could be a poor connection on one of the battery terminals - be sure they are tight.
Could also be a starter solenoid that is sticking.

Engine will not turnover

If there is no power coming IN to the starter relay - the ignition module has failed.
Replace the Ignition.

98 jeepwrangler won't start

This is basic, but first off, try to shift it into neutral, and try to start it. It is easy for the linkage to get out of adjustment, where it thinks the jeep is in gear. If that does not work, make sure you have battery power to the ignition and starter.
