Generally when you get a code for both banks, you do not have an engine failure, but you probably have a significant vacuum leak. First check the rubber hoses around the PCV valve to motor intake and if any rubber is squishy or oily that would indicate a leaking hole. Also check around the entire intake with carb cleaner (engine revs while running if you spray the cleaner near a leaking gasket or intak hose hole).

PO410: Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

PO420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Have there been any driveability or performance issues with the vehicle, have there been any recent repairs or tune-up work performed, if so was the check engine light reset and were the codes recorded on previous repair orders.

Do not rely on scan tool data alone. In most applications, the customer will have the check engine light reset prior to repair. If the original cause of converter failure is intermittent, only the catalyst failure code may show up (masking the original reason for converter failure).

PO442- Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)




Failed Exhaust Converter


Should have gone at least 12 to 14 years


I suspect the car wasn't having a happy life for
many years


You need to change spark plugs every 3 years,
O2 Sensors at 100,000 and get a more poractive
preventative maintenance schedule


The main reason for converter failure is a rich fuel
mixture & spark plugs,oxygen sensors,air filters,
vacuum leaks & more drive fuel trim rich

Indicates Bank 2 catalyst system efficiency is below the acceptable threshold.

High fuel pressure
Damaged exhaust manifold
Damaged catalytic converter
Oil contamination
Cylinder misfiring

432 is catalist below threshold bank two.

Main catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 2 cherokee 2001


If the readings were close to passing, use 3oz of acetone per 10 gals of fuel and it should pass. Then you have a whole year to figure out what's wrong with it! Main cat is the large one. all others are pre-cats.
