1997 GMC Safari SLT, anti-lock brake light comes and goes intermittently. I've replaced the master cylinder but the problem continues. Sometimes when stopped I can depress the brake pedal, the red brake light lights and goes out and then the anti-lock brake warning light goes out as well. How can I remedy this issue? There is no difference in braking performance. Do I need to clear the codes, or somehow re-set the metering pin?

SOURCE: Anti-lock brakes come on just before I stop.

It might be a ALB sensor. Did you check to see if the sensor is operational? Its the cheapest place to check.

There was actually a recall for this. Go to your local GMdealer and have them check your VIN for a recall. If not under recall get out of there its easy to repair yourself don't let'em fool you.Remove the front pads caliper and rotors. Locate the abs sensor mounted to the wheelbearing assembly by a small socket head cap screw (Allen wrench). Removethe bolt and softly gently/wiggle the abs sensor around until it pops upout of the hole. some will break, which is why it wouldbe nice if the recall applies to your vehicle that way if they break gm replaces. Once you get both sides removed, clean themounting surface of all rust or build up with w-d 40 and small steel toothbrush then wipe off excess with clean rag and mild soap and warm water, dry completely make sure no spray residue exist on parts, Next apply a thin layer of lubricant grease to preventfuture rusting and reassemble. The rust build up under the sensor is causing the angle to change resultingin inaccurate wheel speed readings in the abs module your abs module will interprets this asa wheel is either slipping or skidding and applies your abs. This should make you happy with no more irritations. Please rate me. If you need further assistance you can always ask me. Good luck with this.

I WOULD NOT KEEP DRIVING IT.WHEN ABS LIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON.YOU HAVE BRAKE FAILURE. TOW IT TO DEALERSHIP HAVE IT SERVICE.AND CHECK THE ABS BRAKES SYSTEM .BECAUSE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM IS NOT A HOME FIX.BECAUSE THE ABS HYDRAULIC MODULATOR UNIT HAS LOWER FROM HOME POSITION .IN ORDER TO MOVE THE MASTER CYLINDER FROM UNIT.YOU NEED A TECH 2 SCANNER TO DO THE JOB.TO GET ABS BRAKES TO BLEED RIGHT BEST TO GET THEM PRESSURE BLEED INSTEAD OF MANUAL BLEEDING GET LESS AIR IN SYSTEM.THAT WHY SEE DEALER SHIP HAS THE THINGS TO DO THE JOB.

SOURCE: bad brakes on gmc suburban,

Gravity bleed your brakes starting at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder. No pweddle pumping. I Fill M/C and leave cover off. Then open the bleeder and watch what is coming out. Uou can see bubbles. When the fluid drips steady and without bubbles, cole and do the same to the other three. Don't let the master cykinder get low because thr fluid level helps move the fluid and air through the lines.Periodically tap the break lone with your wrench to keep everything moving.. When sll bleeders drip clean and steady. Make sore your rear brakes are adjusted to barely touch the drum. Then top off the master cylinder, cap it and give yourself a "break". :)

The ABS light is usually a speed sensor problem and is a GM nuisance . it should not affect normal braking. It might be a booster for power assist problem, which will affect normal braking (expensive). Get rid of that old GMC.

make sure you are bleeding them by doing them as an abs system,do the right rear then the left front, then the left rear then the right front, the opposite wheels are how the system brakes.

I put all new brakes & lines on my 96 gmc pickup.how do i blead?

Its possible your master cylinder went bad, but if it wasnt bad just before you changed brakes i doubt thats it. Check your rear wheel cylinders that push out the pads to make sure their not leaking. Also check for leaking brakelines. Hope this helps.

Anti-lock brakes come on just before I stop when payment is dry

did you check the alb sensor? You might also have the "return spring" stuck in the emergency brakes. Sometimes they break causing the brake to lock, which in turn activates the alb. Also, check the brake oil level, in some cars alb dont work properely if the oil level is too low. Good Luck
