Question about 2000 Subaru Legacy

1 Answer

Subaru EJ20 non turbo very flat spot under 2,500rpm, funny sounding exhaust, however performance ok after 3,000rpm upwards so not blocked exhaust, emissions normal in every respect, suspect knock sensor or sounds like timing out. On scanner, when throttle advances, timing appears to ******?/? would this suggest knock sensor - subaru says they have a funny "air fuel ratio meter" which looks like another oxygen sensor in front of the traditional oxygen sensor which gives a lot of troubles so could be another possible avenue, any advice?

Thanks for that, but the fact that the car is running fine in upper RPM suggests normal breathing, however we did already pull cam covers off & check cam timing & for wear in the keyway/ stretch in cam belt etc... this car has really confused me. ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO REDUCE THE SPARK ADVANCE AS YOU APPLY THROTTLE - I thought it was the other way around hence why I thought maybe knock sensor is reducing / r.e.tard.ing it.

Yup Subaru seem to think the 'air fuel sensor' which is the device in front of the o2 sensor that looks like another o2 sensor but apparently causes this type of problem - I've never in my life heard of that before considering all the emissions measure bang on, but hey I guess its my next best try.

Could be alot of things... when was last tune up? You might consider having a free OBII scan (fault scan) done at any good parts store to pull fault codes from cars computer - it sounds like a TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) but have scan done so you're not throwing parts at it.

I have a DOHC 1998 twin turbo EJ20 subaru BH5 , engine is knocking. Will a BG5 DOHC EJ20, slot in ....? are they the same ?

Yes they will bolt in. Make sure you have the sensors matched. You might have to do some playing with the computer to make it all work properly. Good luck and have a great day.

I was just wundering could i fit a 2ltr turbo exhaust

you may be able to from the converter back, maybe???? if the turbo pipe is the same diameter and the flange size. Of course, a muffler shop could make any modifications to make it fit. one thing you want to keep is that it all bolts together where it does now, So you can unbolt it for service.........Dont let them weld everything together.
