Where can i locate my electric fan thermostat ? where is the regular thermostat ? is it in line or on the block?

Thermostat location hemi

Find the large rad. hose at the top of the rad. follow that to where it connects to the block . there is your thermostat.

My 1995 camry is running hot. I have replaced the thermostat, hoses & radiator cap, but its still overheating when I stop for about 3 to 5 minutes. Any suggestions plz?

If your model has electric cooling fans they may not be turning on or reaching high speed. The fans work to boost cooling capacity when the regular water pump is not enough.

There are Relays for the fans and they get the signal to turn on from temperature sensors or setting a dash control.

If all switches work, fans, etc. then your Radiator or block may be clogged.

There are at least 3 thermostats on your vehicle: One controls the electric cooling fan for the engine and its sensor is on the front radiator, the second is the passenger heating thermostat located under the dash board regulated by the switch on the dash board, The third is the thermostat housed in the cooling lines that opens at 180-190 degrees located on the top of the block water jacket where one of the heater hoses connects to its housing.

The car model was not included in the question. In general if the radiator fan is not starting the first thing to check are the fuses. Depending on the car's model there is one or two fuses in line with the cooling fan circuit. If there are two fuses, then one is in the fuse plate inside the car, the other one is under the hood.

The next part to test is the thermostat. The thermostat housing is located on the refrigerant fluid lines, either near to the radiator, or near to the engine block. The thermostat can be tested using VOM tool. Read either Ohms or volts to find out if the thermostat is closing the fan circuit when the engine is hot.

Most fan circuits use also relay. Variable speed fans have often more than one relay. The fan relay(s) is often located under the hood. Relays can be tested reading volts at their contacts or swapping the relay with one of the same kind.

If fuses, relay and thermostat are OK, then the fan motor is often the next test. The motor can be tested energizing it directly. Variable speed fans have more than two wires powering the motor. To avoid risk of damaging the fan motor the repairer should refer to specific wiring diagrams before jumping fan cables. A different way of testing the motor is reading volts at fan motor while engine is hot. If there is volts at motor contacts but motor does not come on, then the fan motor is defective.

The fan works but the needle goes to high

The best thing would be to change the thermostat, it is located normally on the intake on the block, just 3-4 bolts or nuts and the thermostat housing splits.

While you are at it, you could flush the coolant system with regular water.

Remember to make sure that coolant fluid is in the whole system after replacing thermostat, top up the reservoir, squeeze all coolant hoses so there is no air trapped anywhere in the system.repeat until there are no more bubbles coming up.

Do the fans come on when the engine overheats? If so nothing wrong with the circuit and the thermostat(not thermo switch!) or radiator is to blame.
Test the fan. There are 2(if you have A/C fitted) Disconnect the electrical plug from the fan. Run 2 wires from the battery straight to the fan and see if the fan comes on. (Be careful when connecting not to short circuit the wires. Theres a lot of power in the battery!) Polarity does not matter. This is a direct current motor so reverse polarity will only make the fan turn in the wrong direction. If the fan turns reconnect its electrical connection and move to the next step.
To test the fan circuit locate the thermo switch. It is on the bottom right of the radiator and has 2 wires connected. disconnect the electrical plug and short circuit the 2 wires by inserting a piece of wire into the connector with the ignition on. The fan should come on. If it does the thermo switch is at fault and needs replacing.
With the electrical sorted there is not much else. Like I mentioned it is either the radiator(blocked) or the thermostat(sticking)
Radiator can be taken to a service centre and have them clean it out for you. The thermostat cannot be repaired and needs to be replaced. It can be removed and the engine will still operate, but just take longer to warm up. I'm not sure on the '99 model, but it is usually located on the right hand side of the engine at the bottom on the water pump housing.

Electric fan

the purpose of an elec. fan vs man belt driven is a man. belt driven fan robs the motor of power. electric does not. and yes it does turn on and off via a signal from the temp sending unit, located close to your thermostat housing, either on the intake manifold itself or the side of eng. block or head, it will have only 1 or 2 wires to it.

Radiator fan not working fan is ok

There is a cable connecting from radiator fan to thermostat switch.
Thermostat switch located at near engine block, you can trace it from radiator hose to engine block, there is a terminal connected to thermostat.
To check wheter fan is ok or not, pull out/disconnet the terminal, radiator fan will be turned on, if not, this could be a problem with radiator fan.
Otherwise you should clean terminal or replace thermostat switch.

have you changed the thermostat? located at upper hose opposite radiator end in the gooseneck (usually 2 screws) make sure you buy a gasket or gasket making compound if changing. most overheats occur due to stuck thermostat (doesn't open to cool) you could pull tstat out for temp fix but it wouldn't heat well in colder weather

'86 Skylark overheats after 15 minutes of driving. Any suggestions? Oil and water are okay.

1. Try this locate your goose neck its where your thermostat is located should be top hose comming from your radiator to your engine block. Tap on it lightly several times this might be made out of aluminum so don't go crazy on it.

2. Do this while it is hot but not over heating see it it fluxuates and it may calm down, sludge and gum builds up around the thermostat and causes it not to open (Or Sticks) CLOSED and creates pressure and heat it's letting the coolant circulate through the engine thus it can't keep the engine cool.

3. Question does the electric fans kick on, if it has electric fans? If not then the fan has a sensor check sensor loose connections and the ground is very important also make sure the fuse is not blown may have two fuses on on engine fuse block and one under the dash check both.

4. Mileage if its high miles car the radiator may be old depending on your situation may consider replacing it, replace the thermostat that usually is the culprit!

REMEMBER TO check coolant level!

5. But not always. Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance! If doing routine checks on your vehicle Isn't your bag of tricks then try your local jiffy lube or other lube shop. GOOD LUCK!
