2003 jaguar x type 2.5. Does the 2.5 have a fuel pump relay? If so where is it located? There are 4 wires, a red, yellow, and two small black wires going to the fuel pump...which wires should have power? What does each of the wires go to?

  • andria_long6 Sep 28, 2010

I know the pump is in the gas tank. Im asking where the fuel pump module is....

  • andria_long6 Sep 28, 2010

No the fuel pump and the fuel pump module are seperate parts. I found it already-the fuel pump module is under the backseat and the fuel pump is in the gas tank. My question now is whether or not the 2.5 motor has a fuel pump relay? If so, where is it located? I also need to know which of the 4 wires coming out of the fuel pump should have power?

  • andria_long6 Sep 28, 2010

which relay is it? There's 6... And are you sure the 2.5 has a relay?..because the manual says there is no fuel pump relay for the 2.5?

  • andria_long6 Sep 28, 2010

Are there any sensors on the motor that would keep the fuel pump from working?

  • andria_long6 Sep 28, 2010

The engine wont start at all...therefore it wont give me any codes. I only know its the fuel pump because I tested for fuel pressure and there is none..i dont know what to do

  • andria_long6 Sep 28, 2010

Ok so the car belongs to my brother. It had overheated so I replaced the head gaskets. There was fuel pressure before but not after. I dont know about alarm systems on jaguars. I checked the inertia switch and its fine. I dont know what the DLC is but I have an obd2 scanner and im getting a P1000 code which is for an incomplete test..but its incomplete because I need the engine to be running to finish the scan.

  • andria_long6 Sep 28, 2010

When should the wire have power going to it?....all the time or only when the motor is cranking?

The fuel pump is in the back of the car, but I don't remember if it is underneath or inside of the fuel tanks?
A fuel pump only has 2 wires, a power and a ground.
But if it is inside the tank, there could also be two wire for the level sending unit.
Jaguar also have an inertial cut out safety switch, which looks like a relay with a plunger button. It is usually under the dash, behind the kick panel on either the passenger or driver's side.
The main fuel pump relay could also be bad.

With a red, yellow, and two black wires, it would seem to me the blacks are probably grounds, the yellow is probably fuel gauge sending unit, and the red is probably pump power.
One way would be to simply test all of them.
None of them should show power except the pump power. That is because the fuel gauge has an oscillator to produce AC that is less likely to ignite the gas, and will read as 0 on a dc voltmeter.

Module can mean many things, but it is does not refer to part of the pump, filter, or pressure regulator, it probably refers to the relay. Relays are often called modules, in that they are a container for some electrical logic.

    Kirk Augustin Sep 28, 2010

There are two reasons a fuel pump needs electrical logic. One is that they draw so much current that if you hooked them directly up to something like the ignition switch, the switch would wear out too quick from the heat and arcing. The other is that you need to have safety cut outs on the pump if the engine dies or there is an accident. This electrical logic can be performed by a simple relay, but could also be more complex or called a module.

If you are leaving the ignition key on and expecting to check power at the wires, it won't work.
You need someone to cycle the key, and they quickly test wires for power. The pump module will typically only give a few seconds of power to the pump at time, if the engine is not running and starter not turning.

Check for fuel pump power coming into the fuel pump control module plug.
If there is not power coming in, then the problem if not the control module or the pump, but something before that, like a fuse or ignition switch.

Like all modern cars the fuel pump assembly is located inside the gas tank, the fuel tank must be removed to replace the pump, there is no other access to the pump. Also skim through the long article about problems with the fuel tank and fuel system in your year and model, it is a copy of a factory inspection and repair procedure

1st u need to understand that the fuel pump circuit only remains powered up for 1 second when the key is turned to run unless the engine is started, that is ONE SECOND, do u understand this when doing your testing? the relay is under the hood as far as i remeber in the relay cwenter.

The pump is inside the fuel tank. The wires run from the 3rd wire from the oil sending unit to prime the fuel upon starting, The other runs from the relay. The relay operates the pump after the oil pressure is at the normal PSI range

Yes there is but they work in a closed loop system with the control module and the throttle module, if it is a fuel system fault then the fastest way to find which is causing it is to extract the fault codes from the ECM that way you can narrow it down to what is causing it.

    Ok,

Did anything happen before it stop going?

Is the alarm system deactivated properly?

Have you got a scan tool which you can plug into the DLC, the engine dos not need to go to get fault codes out.

    Let me know

It should have power when the ignition key is turned to on position.

Hi Greg-
The fuel pump is provided power by the SBSR- right side B-pillar airbag module. You can check for power and ground at the connector of the fuel pump across the 2 larger wires. The brown wire is ground. You should have battery voltage to the connector.

2003 x type jaguar fuel pump location

The fuel pump is located under the back seat cushion. There is a release tab on both sides of the lower cushion by where your knees go when your sitting in the seat to pull up the lower back cushion. Once removed you will see under some insulation a white plastic ring that you turn counterclock wise to access the fuel and jet pumps, as well as the fuel sending units.

this is the fuel pump itself that has failed, replace it. It is located inside the fuel tank and is sold as a module assembly about $675

or as just a pump which you splice into the old sender assembly fuel pump module for around $120
