INSPECTION

Inspect the belts for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately. It is always best to replace all drive belts at one time, as a preventive maintenance measure, during this service operation.


CHECKING TENSION AND ADJUSTMENT

See Figure 1
The belt tension on most driven components is adjusted by moving the component (alternator, power steering pump etc.) within the range of a slotted bracket. Some brackets (toothed) use a rack and pinion mechanism which moves the alternator side-to-side to adjust the belt tension. With this configuration, no prying tools are required. On Quantum (except 5 cylinder) and Fox models, the air conditioner compressor drive belts are adjusted by varying the number of discs (shims) between the halves of the crankshaft pulley. Before adjusting the belt tension on any engine, look at the mounting and determine what kind of bracket is used.
To check belt tension, push in on the drive belt about midway between the crankshaft pulley and the driven component. If the belt is less than 39.4 in. (1m) long, it should deflect between 0.80-0.120 in. (2-5mm). For longer belts, it should deflect between 0.40-0.060 in. (10-15mm). Belt size is usually printed on the back side of the belt. If it can't be read, it's probably time to replace it.

Slotted Brackets

  1. Loosen the adjustment nut/bolt in the slotted bracket. Slightly loosen the pivot bolt.
  2. Pull (don't pry) the component outward to increase tension. Push inward to reduce tension. Tighten the adjusting nut/bolt and the pivot bolt.

  1. Components, such as the power steering pump and some air conditioner compressors, may be mounted with a double slotted adjusting bracket using a threaded bolt and locknut to adjust and maintain tension. Loosen the locknut(s) and slightly loosen the bolt(s) in the slotted groove(s). Turn the threaded adjustment bolt(s) in or out to gain correct tension. Tighten locknut(s) and slotted bracket bolt(s).
  2. Recheck the drive belt tension, readjust if necessary.

Toothed Brackets
See Figures 5 and 6

  1. Loosen the tension bolt and the alternator pivot bolt. These bolts should be loosened until the alternator swings freely under its own weight.

  1. Adjust the V-belt by turning the nut on the tension bolt while checking the belt deflection with your thumb.
  2. Once the proper tension is achieved, tighten the tension bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Tighten the pivot bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  3. Recheck the drive belt tension, readjust if necessary.

Split Pulley
See Figure 7
On Quantum (except 5 cylinder) and Fox models, the air conditioner compressor drive belts are adjusted by varying the number of discs (shims) between the halves of the crankshaft pulley.

  1. Remove the nuts/bolts securing the tensioner plate and crankshaft pulley halves.
  2. Add or remove the amount of spacer discs between the pulley halves until the belt tension is correct.

If there are any shims left over, do not throw them away. On Fox and turbo diesel Quantum models, store the extra shims in front of the split pulley (behind the tensioner plate). On Quantums with 4 cylinder gas engines, store the extra shims behind the split pulley (in front of the crankshaft hub).

  1. Secure the pulley halves. Torque the pulley nuts or bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

If a belt must be replaced, the driven unit must be loosened and moved to its extreme loosest position (usually by moving it toward the center of the motor). After removing the old belt, check the pulleys for dirt or built-up material which could affect belt contact. Carefully install the new belt, it may appear to be just a little too small to fit over the pulley flanges. Fit the belt over the largest pulley (usually the crankshaft pulley at the bottom center of the motor) first, then work on the smaller one(s). Gentle pressure in the direction of rotation is helpful. Some belts run around a third or idler pulley, which acts as an additional pivot in the belt's path. It may be possible to loosen the idler pulley as well as the main component, making your job much easier. Depending on which belt(s) you are changing, it may be necessary to loosen or remove other interfering belts to get at the one(s) you want. Some models have a front engine mount installed through the air conditioner compressor belt circle. Support the engine and remove the mount prior to belt removal and installation.
When buying replacement belts, remember that the fit is critical according to the length of the belt, the width of the belt, the depth of the belt and the angle or profile of the V shape (always match up old belt with new belt if possible). The belt shape should exactly match the shape of the pulley; belts that are not an exact match can cause noise, slippage and premature failure.
After the new belt is installed, adjust it for proper tension. This is sometimes a three or four-handed job; you may find an assistant helpful. Make sure that all the bolts you loosened are retightened and that any other loosened belts also have the correct tension. A new belt can be expected to stretch a bit after installation so be prepared to re-adjust your new belt.
After installing a new belt, run the engine for about 5 minutes and then recheck the belt tension.

HOW TO INSTALL ALTERNATOR BELT DIAGRAM

On most of the 1981-88 model year engines covered in this information, the alternator/water pump drive belt is tensioned by a screw type tensioner, which makes precise tension adjustment easy.

  1. On 1981-87 models, loosen the locknut, located on the locking screw or lockbolt-located in a slotted portion of the outboard alternator mounting bracket.
  2. On 1988 models, loosen the T-bolt, located in the center of the disc shaped portion of the outboard alternator bracket.
  3. Tighten or loosen the drive belt tensioning bolt. This bolt is tightened to increase belt tension and loosened to decrease it.
  4. When the belt tension is correct, tighten the lockbolt.

Timing Belt and Tensioner REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1984–87 Engines
  1. Turn the crankshaft pulley until it is at Top Dead Center.
  2. Remove the pulley belt, water pump pulley, crankshaft pulley, and timing gear cover. Mark the direction of timing belt rotation.
  3. Loosen, but do not remove, the tensioner adjusting bolt and pivot bolt.
  4. Slide the timing belt off of the camshaft timing gear and the crankshaft pulley gear and remove it from the engine.
  5. To remove the camshaft timing gear pulley, first remove the center bolt and then remove the pulley with a pulley remover or a brass hammer. This can be accomplished by simply removing the timing belt upper cover, loosening the tensioner bolts, and sliding the timing belt off of the gear to expose the gear for removal. NOTE: If you remove the timing gear with the timing belt cover in place, be sure not to let the woodruff key fall inside the timing cover when removing the gear from the camshaft. Inspect the timing belt. Replace if over 90,000 miles old, if oil soaked (find source of oil leak also), or if worn on leading edges of belt teeth.     To install:
  6. Be sure to install the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft timing gear pulley in the top dead center position. Align the marks on the camshaft timing gear so they are parallel with the top of the cylinder head and the woodruff key is facing up. NOTE: When installing the timing belt, do not allow oil to come in contact with the belt. Oil will cause the rubber to swell. Be careful not to twist the belt unnecessarily or bend in a 90°angle, since it is made with fiberglass; nor should you use tools having sharp edges when installing or removing the belt. Be sure to install the belt with the arrow facing in the same direction it was facing during removal.
  7. After installing the belt, adjust the belt tension by first rotating the crankshaft counterclockwise 1/4 turn. Then, re-tighten the adjusting bolt and finally the tensioner pivot bolt.
  8. Replace the other components removed for belt access.
  9. Start the car, check timing and adjust if necessary WARNING
    Do not remove the adjusting or pivot bolts, only loosen them. When adjusting, do not use any force other than the adjuster spring. If the belt is too tight, it will result in a shortened belt life.

How to replace a 87 ford tempo serpentine belt


Make a simple drawing of the routing of the belt. or try to take a digital picture for reference on installation. Typically, one side of the belt has groves, and the other smooth. The pulleys will be grooved or smooth to match the side of the belt they are supposed to contact, don't put the grooved side of the belt on a smooth pulley or vise versa. There should be an "idler pulley" which applies pressure to the belt to keep it tight. This idler maybe manual or automatic. A manual pulley will usually have an adjustment bolt running perpendicular to the pulley face. You will loosen the bolt in the middle of the pulley a bit, then loosen the adjustment bolt until there is enough slack in the belt to remove it from at least one pulley, the the whole belt should be easy enough to remove, barring any engine mounts in the way. If an automatic (Sprung) tensioner is used there is usually a way to get a 3/8" or 1/2" drive breaker bar onto the pulley and actually "flex" it so that the belt tension is relieved. You will need to hold pressure on the tensioner until the belt is removed from a pulley, this may take another set of hands. Installation is the reverse of removal. Old automatic tensioners can sometimes get stiff, may need to be replaced, or removed and lubricated until it actuates smoothly. Check all the pulleys very carefully to insure the belt is aligned properly, before starting the engine. many a belt has been destroyed when someone started the engine with belt misaligned. IF YOU HAD NEW BELTS AND NEW STARTER PUT IN THEN YOU HAVE A BELT TENSION PROBLEM.THIS COULD TWO THINGS ONE YOU NEED TO ADJUST THE ALT BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOO MUCH TENSION AND THE OTHER COULD BE YOU HAVE A BAD ALT PULLEY BEARING.YOU COULD TAKE THE ALT TO AN ELECTRICAL SHOP AND HAVE THEM CHANGE THE BEARING FOR A FEW BUCKS.E-MAIL ME IF THIS HELPS.MY E-MAIL IS KPHULESAR@COMCAST.NET.

Tune-up Specifications
Air/Fuel Ratio 0.7% Air/Fuel Ratio-Limits[1] 0.3 - 1.1% Timing[2] 6°+/- 1°BTDC Timing Advance[3] 30°+/- 3°BTDC Idle RPM[4] 800 +/- 50 [1] Check CO with the oxygen sensor connected. [2] AT 2300 RPM, and coolant temperature sensor disconnected. [3] Normal operating temperature, with coolant temp. sensor connected, at 2300 RPM. Add initial timing. [4] A/C off.
Timing mark is on flywheel, access hole is on top of bellhousing. Remove access plug with 27mm wrench if necessary
Firing Order is > 1342 Clockwise Rotation & #1 Plug Wire is at 2 Oclock on Distribitor Cap


Align the mark (can be a dot or notch) on the intermediate shaft sprocket with the notch in the crank pulley. Align the mark (can be a dot or notch) on the "Back" of camshaft sprocket with the top edge of the valve cover gasket. Be sure all the timing marks are properly aligned.

NOTE : The 8 valve engine requires a special wrench, Volkswagen No. US4493 or equivalent, to adjust the camshaft drive belt tensioner. Whenever the drive belt is removed and refitted, the camshaft and intermediate shaft timing MUST be adjusted. The drive belt can be replaced without removing the belt sprockets.
  1. Loosen alternator adjusting bolts and remove the fan belt.
  2. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley.
  3. Remove the upper timing cover bolts and remove the cover.
  4. Remove the timing belt guide, if equipped.
  5. Turn the engine by hand to set the No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) and remove the crankshaft pulley.
  6. Remove bolt and nuts securing the lower timing cover and remove the cover. CAUTION: Turning the camshaft or crankshaft with the timing belt removed may cause damage to pistons and/or valves.
  7. Loosen timing belt tensioner locknut, release belt tension and remove belt from sprockets.
  8. Inspect belt for visible damage such as missing teeth or exposed threads. Inspect tensioner bearing for smooth running. Any damaged components should be replaced.
NOTE : On high mileage engines, failure of the tensioner bearing is a possibility. Consider replacing the bearing when replacing the timing belt.
  1. Align the mark (can be a dot or notch) on the intermediate shaft sprocket with the notch in the crank pulley. Align the mark (can be a dot or notch) on the "Back" of camshaft sprocket with the top edge of the valve cover gasket. Be sure all the timing marks are properly aligned.
  2. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft. Fit the timing belt starting with the crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets. Fit the belt so that it is as tight as possible between the crankshaft and the intermediate shaft sprockets and between the intermediate shaft and camshaft sprockets.
    1. Turn the belt tensioner clockwise to adjust the tension. The direction is important to avoid contact with the timing cover. Check the tension by twisting the belt as shown. You should be able to twist it no more than 90 degrees.
    2. Tighten the tensioner locknut to: 33 ft lbs (45 Nm)
    3. Rotate the crankshaft two revolutions and recheck the belt tension and the timing marks for proper alignment.
    NOTE: Very slight movement of sprockets and marks can be expected as belt tension is adjusted. Slight movement is OK. The smallest possible increment of adjustment is one whole tooth of the belt or sprocket.
    1. Remove the crankshaft pulley and refit the lower timing cover. Tighten the bolts to: 87 in lbs (10 Nm)
    2. Refit crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolts to: 15 ft lbs (20 Nm)
    3. Refit timing belt guide, if equipped.
    4. Refit upper timing cover and tighten bolt and nuts to: 87 in lbs (10 Nm)
    5. Refit water pump pulley and tighten the bolts to: 15 ft lbs (20 Nm)
    6. Refit fan belt and adjust tension. Tighten alternator adjusting bolts.

This procedure involves correcting the tension on the power steering accessory and A/C compressor drive belt.

1. Loosen the power steering pump locking bolts A and B and pivot bolt C(Illustration 1 and 2 ) to allow adjustment of belt tension.
2. Using a 1/2" breaker bar, adjust belt tension by applying torque to the square hole "D" on the power steering pivot bracket. Adjust the tension as follows:

Belt tension with no belt replacement: A. Using the Belt Tension Gauge Special Tool Kit C-4162, adjust the belt tension to 100 lb.
B. Tighten in order, first tighten the locking bolt A to 27 Nm (20 ft. Ibs) then, bolt B to27Nm (20 ft. Ibs). Finally tighten the pivot bolt C to 54 Nm (40 ft. Ibs).
Belt tension with belt replacement:
A. Using the Belt Tension Gauge Special Tool Kit C-4162, adjust the belt tension to 135 lb.
B. Tighten in order, first tighten the locking bolt A to 27 Nm (20 ft. Ibs) then, bolt B to 27Nm (20 ft. Ibs). Finally tighten the pivot bolt C to 54 Nm (40 ft. Ibs).
C. Start the engine and allow the vehicle to idle for 15 minutes to allow the belt to seat.
D. Repeat the belt tensioning procedure, set belt tension to 135 lb.
