Question about Jeep Wrangler

3 Answers

I had my automatic shift cable fixed by a pro, but it keeps coming apart. I'm afraid to go to the store after work because you have no warning, it just stops shifting. This has happened three times already. How we fix this without having replace the cable? My husband has been laid off for a year and I can't afford what the pro charges. It's a 2004 Jeep Wrangler.

If you don't want to replace it then your only other option is to weld it in place. If you rent the welder machine for an hour it will cost you less than $50. Or you might be lucky and have a friend with one that can be borrowed for free.

Hi Liz. Some pro. Does he have a supervisor, a boss, the owner of the garage.... if so call them and file a formal complaint. Threaten filing complaints with the BBB and your state's attorney general.

Now to the shift cable. Call around and get estimates, Your pro clearly does not know how to fix this. Get it fixed by a reputable shop and send the bill to your pro. Joe

I have a 1984 Nissan Sentra automatic runs fine does reverse first and second but won't shift into 3rd or overdrive what's wrong

If this is an automatic transmission (you did not say) it may be a shift solenoid in the trans has failed. Remove trans pan and you may well see the solenoid has come apart. Easy fix.

How do I fix the shifting cable at the linkage it has come apart and rubber on bolt is real brittle

If shift cable is the problem, can you replace it? My biggest problem is I can't see anything from here.
Maybe you can remove the part that is concern and show it to the people at your local auto store or the service department of your local dealership, maybe they can order new part?

Another thought is to find your year--make--model at local salvage year, see if they have the same part in decent shape. Like I said, I can't see anything from here.

Warning light does not go out when footbrake is released via the pull release handle

The problem is easily solved my lubricating the foot brake cable with some silicon grease. Th ebest place to buy it is from a pro bicycle shop, because pro bikes use lots of cables and they need to work perfectly when shifting their many 20+ gears.

I have a 2007 Dodge Caliber SXT Automatic Not Shifting.

You are going to cost yourself more money by trying to drive it like this.
Go to an Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys autoparts and get a free scan. Ask for the Code numbers. Most lkely they will tell you what you need to fix it.

You are not only not in overdrive, but probably in 3rd gear. You need to be in 4th or 5th before the Overdrive is suppose to work. Overdrive will not work in the lower gears. AT 60mph you should be at half the RPM that you are trying to run at.

Do not exceed 2200 RPM. Have the Brakes checked if the autoparts store can not scan the brake system. The cheaper scanners do not have that function.

If you can not repair it from what the parts store tells you, contact us again with the Code numbers. Some Codes are for professionals, they help with pricing a repair by you so you can ask for a price to install this or that.

Some repairs are owner friendly, bolt-on and finished. Have store wipe memory after all repairs are done.

How do you adjust the shift cable on a 1995 gmc jimmy, wont go into reverse or park.

On the 1995 Jimmy, the shift cable can come loose on the mount on the side of the transmission where the cable meets the trans. When it slips, the alignment goes off and causes the driver to not be able to put the trans into park. If you take a long stick you can push the shift arm on the trans to the park position and your trans will go into park.....what you (and I) really need to know is how to take the shift cable mount apart and reset it.

Idle adjust screw

What car? What engine? Carburetor? Injection? Generally if the car uses an accelerator cable, just follow that cable. The idle adjusting screw is usually in the area where the cable ends. Gasoline fuel injected engines have a very, very sensitive idle adjusting screw.Common idling problems most often have nothing to do with that screw.

1994 lexus 300 will not shift but will shift if i manually shift

If the transmission "brain" in modern cars senses problems it can keep the tranny from shifting. Usually leaves you in second gear as a safety and warning indication. I don't now if that year lexus had this ability but getting it checked on a diagnostic computer that read transmission codes should shed some light on your situation.
